One of the great screen adaptations of a Stephen King story and one of the best horror movies of the early 2000s (i.m.o.). A skeptic (modeled after the Great Randy?) talks his way into staying in a notoriously haunted hotel room and learns a little humility in the process. Incredibly tight script and direction with John Cusack’s admirable performance in the lead. The adaptation differs a bit from the King story in shortening the part of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson), but it makes up for this with steady building tension and revelations of the tragedies that have filled Cusack’s life.

Fun fact. 1408 was the portal number in The Dark Tower so Jake could find his way back.
