Hitler declared war on the USA on the 11th of December 1941, so it would be impolite to just ignore it.

Why do protest signs from back then have such good font and spacing, and the protest signs from now look like a grade school science projects?

The irony of just saying to them, the fact that you are free to peacefully protest your support for Nazism in the US is the principle reason to oppose Nazism everywhere.

A little bit of context. The world at that time just recovered from the traumas of WW1 and the USA weren’t happy to see Europe getting back into a huge conflict. Fascism taking roots everywhere, even the USA, didn’t help.
One thing people tend to forget is the USA did do a lot prior to officially entering the conflict, such as seriously hindering Japan’s logistics in the Pacific, which led to the retribution of Pearl Harbor.

Hi, I teach American history. While there was certainly people in the US who sympathized with Hitler and his anti-Semitic ideals, that’s likely not the case with these individuals. This is likely a case reflecting the isolationist feelings of the time that harken back to the First World War. During the interwar years, journalists and authors all over the United States published books about the money that was made by corporations and the like (see: DuPont) during WWI. Due to this, the depression and the same anti-immigrant hysteria we see now (tHeY’lL tAkE our JoBs) among other more minor factors it’s a bit disingenuous to call it “pro-Hitler”.
Edit: this is from July 1941, before our entrance into the Second World War. So definitely isolationist protests.

“why not peace” …’ok i agree!’ (unfolds sign) “with HITLER!” uh oh
also… “America for Americans….. well not actual native Americans, but Europeans that moved here…. ok not all Europeans that moved here, just western ones that aren’t Irish or Italian and moved here a while ago” is what the third poster should say

The US used to have a generally neutral foreign policy and was very reluctant to get involved in foreign wars and affairs. Their participation in both world wars was reluctant and met with a lot of resistance from the public. Hard to imagine that now that putting their nose where it doesn’t belong is one of their hallmark characteristics.

After WW1 Americans were definitely not eager to get involved in another European War, so this is probably pre-Pearl Harbor and more anti-war not anti-Hitler
Now if this photo is from post-Pearl Harbor….yeahhhhh not a good look

The lack of historical context for so many people in here is sad.
1) These people lived through WWI and didn’t want to live through another.
2) They are basically the hippies of Vietnam
3) Information wasn’t readily available like it is now. No internet. Meaning all they knew about Nazi Germany came from the press.
4) What made the Nazis so hated today is information uncovered AFTER (at least when the public became aware) we entered the war.
5) They weren’t hated for taking over countries; they are hated over the Holocaust activities.
Every nation has fought many wars over land where they genocided tribes throughout their history. That killing was done to prevent future uprisings/squash rebellions. There was 0 reason as to what happened there besides evil.

It’s not apparent from the photo that this was “during” WWII. If this was in the late thirties, before Pearl Harbor, it would be pretty normal for Americans to want to avoid entanglement in another world war barely twenty years after WWI.

I feel like these signs are more pro-isolationism and anti-war after the horrors of WW1 were not that far off, as opposed to “pro” Hitler. These signs are… signs… of a different problem. The thought that just ignoring the other side of the globe is a valid option in the increasingly more globalist world of the time. They felt atrocities in Europe was Europe’s problem, not that they’re supporting him. Though I’m sure plenty of the time would have. At this point in time I don’t think the genocide being committed was public knowledge yet. The average Joe would have just seen yet another European war. the UK, Germany, Russia, and France fighting with one another was not exactly seen as rare over the last 200 years pre-WWII.

Those are not “pro-Hitler” signs and you don’t give the date. Roosevelt didn’t want to attack Germany until Italy, Germany and Japan declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941 (4 days after the Pearl Harbor attack).

They weren’t pro-Hitler, they were anti-war. They didn’t know about the concentration camps. Everyone in America and Europe were still traumatized by World War I and a large number of Americans didn’t want to get involved in what they saw as another European war. The attitudes changed once America was attacked at Pearl Harbor and Hitler and Mussolini declared war on the US. Even before the attack, Lindbergh — a huge America Firster — agreed to help the War Department by providing reports on what he saw when Germany invited him over for what he knew was a propaganda tour.
