This is the scam they pull to rake in people’s estates. You’re gonna need a lawyer. Don’t pay a cent.

Was this your plan or your moms? If it was hers you have zero obligation to pay.

What reason did the insurance give for not paying? Especially since the detail DOES show some covered amounts but still nothing paid or even discounted to insurance rates?

If it’s in her name you are not responsible but it would be taken out of the estate if applicable

Deny, defend, depose. Fuck insurance

Half a million dollars for a week in the hospital? Bro next time I need to go to the hospital I’ll just kill myself then and there lol

So sorry for your loss

Ask for a refund since they didn’t give the final product.

Fuck insurance and fuck hospitals

What are those 2 $318K charges?? Fucking crazy.

don’t pay it. I racked up 30k in medical debt as a young adult and just ignored the bills, and in turn collector calls. fuck these companies, if I some how end up talking to a collector I tell them the only way they will get that money is if they come here in person and fight me for it. they let up immediately

What insurance policy did your mom have? The out of pocket max under the ACA is $9.500.

BTW, you don’t owe a penny on this. Ignore it.

This is why we celebrate the death of the insurance ceo 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is the kind of shit that is unreal and why I hate people who argue that our medical system is better.

That’s almost 7K per hour for every hour she was in the hospital. Unbelieveable.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Ask them to forward it to her gravesite. Technically it’s her debt, not yours.

She must have had United Healthcare? Sorry for your loss.

is it strange for me too think that this is an extreme high amount of money for 4 days in hospital?
its not ok that insures company dont pay alot of shit they should pay…
butt the US hospital bills are high as fuck and should be looked at too.
basicly ur hole systemen is crazy as fuck.

How the actual fuck did the insurance cover $0 of almost $700,000???

It’s wild, you can be worth a couple of million dollars and get absolutely bankrupted in short order. Why the fuck would any society want this to happen to *any* of its people.

They don’t expect you to pay, but to steal from your mom’s estate. I recommend the Luigi approach.

Deny. Defend. Depose.

Sorry for your loss. Don’t pay it. Debt dies with the person. Don’t believe what anyone else tells otherwise. Oh, if she has left you property, money etc, make sure you get it into your name ASAP. Collection *could* come after those, get a lawyer

Healthcare is a human right. Medicare For All!!

Very sorry for your loss.

Meanwhile, they expect 2/3 of a million dollars, even though they failed to keep her alive. I wouldn’t send a dime.

I live in Canada.

The night before my mum died in the hospital, we received a note and an invoice to go down to the admin office the next day to leave a credit card number to pay for incidentals (telephone, TV service, which was around $8/day).

She died the next morning.

I went down to the admin office after she died to settle the bill. I told the admin that I was late coming down because my mum had died that morning. She took the invoice from me, ripped it up, and gave me condolences. She also gave me a voucher to leave the parking garage without paying, even though we had been parked in the garage for about 3 days by that point.

For all the shortfalls we have in Canada, good people are not one of them.

That’s such a disgusting amount to expect one to try and pay. It’s high time we start suing these “non profits” and making them think twice. I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother but that is an egregious amount of money to bill someone.

Send them a bill for pain and suffering and future loses due to their failure to perform adequately enough to save his mother.

Deny…defend…depose…

Is it rude to ask – condolences and apologies in advance – what procedure they billed at $300K+?

If you are worried about this getting taken from her estate get an itemized bill. You can go through every line item and make sure they didn’t add BS or over charged. They are legally required to send an itemized bill within 30 days, but they don’t because most people don’t know about getting one and negotiating lower cost.

This is an EOB, not the bill yet. If the bill is not itemized, ask them for it to be itemized as they’re required to provide an itemized bill if you ask for it. Even if they’re going after the estate, you can possibly mitigate the amount.

My friend called yesterday, and we were talking about current events. He told me he keeps getting new, surprise bills years after the hospitalization and death of his son, after paying $12k. Imagine having a rare good day, and you open the mail to be reminded of the worst day of your life by people who want more and more money.

You have zero obligation to pay that. Do sign anything and do not make any kind of payments. That is your mom’s debt not yours.

This is gross. Who has a casual $600k sitting around like this?

This is NOT a bill. It is a summary of expenses that are being processed. Her insurance has not paid out.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Looks like insurance denied payment. You can call insurance to see if they will give you any info. If not, it’s on the hospital to call insurance to find out why they denied the claims. Either way not your responsibility. Also very sorry for your loss.

OP, I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. That’s devastating.

As far as the statement goes, I wouldn’t sweat it too much for now. I don’t know the circumstances under which your mom was admitted to the hospital, but I was admitted to the ICU in critical condition in my 20s, and getting the paperwork done wasn’t exactly on the top of anyone’s to-do list while I was dying. When I got home, I had a bill like this because the insurance hadn’t been processed properly. After a couple of phone calls, it was cleared up and I owed about $150.

Oh we canaford to die here…..it’s the people we leave behind

My Grandmother passed on 11/28 many years ago.

SSi demanded all the ssi be returned by 12/1 . They gave us three days to process her surprise death. Thankfully my grandfather had it like that, so it did not ruin him, or us

Her medical bills for the week she was there was almost a million dollars. A million dollars, to die. Ad that was just to the hospital. Not the ER, the surgery, anything else.

It is the insurance AND the medical places.

19 for a tiny tube of toothpaste? 16 for a paper toothbrush? 20 for shower soap? And it is all prison issue crap

Tho i agree with you, i dont see how this is r/antiwork

When my mom died in hospital, first words out of the estate attorney was “don’t pay a single bill.” Granted she didn’t have much in the way of assets and I had to cash fund her funeral. Any assets she had came to me first to reimburse me for funeral expenses.
