A few months ago I received some terrible news. I was diagnosed with Ligma and the doctors prescribed me three mansions and a yacht. Of course those greedy AF medical insurers denied my claims 😡

My mother lives in Italy, her doctor said a week at a thermal spa was necessary because she was stressed out and her hip hurt and, guess what, she got to go spend a week at the thermal spa getting massages and mud baths and ozone baths and sauna and cold plunges… she did pay for her hotel but, yeah, doc gives it the ol say-so and you get what you need even if it isn’t a pill or an operation.

Physician here. While I want to this to be true I’m not sure it should be. Most physicians try to practice with stewardship of keeping costs down and only ordering what is necessary but it’s not always the case even for good intentioned doctors. Even with insurance companies essentially practicing medicine without a medical license and denying/altering care, the number of unnecessary tests I see ordered on a daily basis in the hospital is staggering and would likely be much much worse without any oversight. The current system of insurance executives/officers basically practicing medicine without a license needs to go, but there absolutely needs to be more oversight and not less

If the doctor is House the speed boat would probably cure you, or at least reveal the clue that correctly diagnoses you.

for completeness yes, if the doctor says speedboat is necessary you don’t deny it. You can investigate the doctor later and if he was lying he charged and pay back the speedboat

If a doctor says something is medically necessary, and the insurance company says it is not, how is the insurance company not liable for the unlicensed practice of medicine?

Make a co-op health insurance company, where the members are the owners.

Where the hell did these insurance bootlickers come from? Is this a concerted pysop after the recent CEO adjustment? Sure, oversight is necessary. That oversight should be by disinterested medical professionals that prioritize health and safety over costs, not a for-profit corporation using AI models to save a few bucks. Using the speedboat example is absolutely gross when we know for a fact that denials can, and do, rather frequently, result in avoidable suffering and death.Â

Lets say I go to the doctor with a headache I developed earlier in the morning. Is it ok if a doctor deems it “necessary” for me to get an MRI scan for my headache since he deems it possible I have a brain tumor?

Guy raises a perfectly valid point about a fundamental issue with that naive and shortsighted idea with an intuitive example to make the problem as clear as possible even for idiots.
Idiots still fail to understand somehow.
Literally no country works like that, even in other first world countries with public healthcare, and for very good reason.

What are they talking about??? US is literally the country where the doctor asks you what to get. I mean, not literally, but you get ads for prescription drugs for a reason. My doctor won’t prescribe me antibiotics if he’s sure that they won’t help me. Let alone a speedboat. Although he would give you a few days off if you’re depressed or low key burned out. Something that’s unheard of in the us of a

If you expect someone else to pay for you, its reasonable to expect they want some say in what they are buying.Â
