There’s a good chance Susan googled if the place was open. If you’re going to be there anyway, then why shouldn’t Susan stop by?

We have a personal rule in our family that we don’t go to grocery stores or order anything for delivery on Christmas Eve even though it would make or break the holiday. It’s not right to make people work on the holiday.

TBF they only go there because it is open. If it was closed theyd understand.
So like, again, it isn’t the consumer it is the business.
The business doesn’t care about the livelihood of their employees…and could give a fuck about their life or experiences or literally anything but their value add.

While it’s not the customer’s fault that the store is open, it’s still bad taste to comment on it while actively using the service you can’t believe is open.

When I was working retail years back and had nothing else much going on, I had ‘open availability’ to get a slightly higher wage, and at one point I worked every single day in a row for 15 months, including weekends, holidays, everything. When the shop was closed, I was there repainting stairs and making repairs.
Still a long way from the worst job I ever had, but people who work M-F and get weeks of paid vacation every year just do not understand.

I bought this up on my local subreddit and it was me being inconsiderate to people who don’t celebrate the holiday 🙄

This is my life as a mail carrier. It’ll be 8 at night and some old lady will be telling me all about how much of a shame it is I have to work so late and how I should be with my family so close to Christmas, meanwhile the whole time ill be unloading 8 huge ass amazon boxes. Like bitch I’m out here this late because of people like you. You are directly responsible for my situation.

This is one of the reasons why I do my Christmas shopping a month prior. I worked retail before (especially Christmas and Black Friday) and know how crass and tactless people can be. I know it doesn’t make much of a difference, but I’m not going to shop on Christmas Eve and contribute to the exploitation of employees. Those people got families to go to. It’s a matter of respect. If I can’t have a say on it, at least I’ll vote with my wallet. If more of us did the same and this got normalized, shops would probably think twice before holding their employees hostage on Christmas Eve in the name of profit. I think this is pretty easy to understand, but it would never happen since, ultimately, customers and employers don’t give a fuck.

There are still a lot of people who would work even if shops were closed. People like nurses, doctors, fire departments for example.

I always do this as a way to portray to the cashier that I completely relate to their situation and how messed up it is. Now I’m debating whether they always think this and I was the asshole the whole time!

My daughter had a doctor’s appointment in a town almost an hour away at lunch time. The office scheduled it, I didn’t ask for that day. So we stopped for lunch. I tipped $20 cash on a $22 meal. World doesn’t stop, the most we can do is be considerate.

Not everyone has the time off to go before Christmas Eve, not everyone has their paycheck or bonus before Christmas Eve. Maybe they did shop for Christmas Eve but forgot something or didn’t realize they needed it. Maybe they need cold medicine or extra food for dinner because we invited some more folks to dinner who didn’t have anywhere else to go.
And what about the millions of people who do not celebrate Christmas, much less Christmas Eve!!

There are 2 sides to this… in my 20’s I worked jobs where I had no choice but to work holidays, and some years I had to shop last minute or during rush hour for gifts and groceries right before Christmas. In my 30’s I am so grateful that I can plan all shopping to be done the week before Christmas, and plan to avoid stores the week of Christmas. It is a costly thing to accomplish. Very few people WANT to be working or shopping during the holidays.
