This is Mt. Kailash in Tibet, just north of Nepal. It has never been climbed.

It is the most sacred mountain in Hinduism (considered the home of Lord Shiva), Buddhism, Jainism and other smaller known faiths.

The Chinese government initially gave permission to Reinhold Messner to climb the mountain in the 1980s but he reportedly declined, saying

“If we conquer this mountain, then we conquer something in people’s souls. I would suggest they go and climb something a little harder.”

“The climbing of the mountain is prohibited by the Chinese government due to its religious significance.”

How can they know it’s never been climbed

The Kailash Kora is a Buddhist circumambulation pilgrimage around the base of the mountain. Take three days. That’s the preferred method of “conquering” this mountain. Not easy to get to, but apparently the pilgrimage infrastructure is pretty robust and the trail is well marked. At least I hope so. Will see this June.

From North pole this mountain is 6666 kilometers and from south pole it is 2*6666 = 13332 kilometers.

I was there in 2002 for Sagadawa and hiked around it with thousands of other people, some by yak, most on foot. One the most special places on earth.

How is this possible with all the obnoxious people we have

In Hinduism, it is said that the omnipotent god of destruction resides on the mountain.

Don’t get him angry or he’ll open his third eye on his forehead and you’ll cease to exist

That we know of

It’s even got steps

Dog I can fuckin’ climb that. Get outa here with that never been climbed.

*mumbling* Never been climbed. I’ll show his ass climbed. Stupid mountain. Climb it all day.

It’s a sacred mountain.

Looks like a pyramid.

I saddens me that I need supplemental oxygen for my climb to get upstairs to my bed

Well, not with that attitude…

i hope it stays that way.

How much you wanna bet I could throw a football over that mountain?

Ancient astronaut theorists say that’s Mt. Kailash in Tibet, just north of Nepal.

This lead me into a bit of a rabbit hole while watching the cricket.

*as far as we know.

Is that a challenge? How would this compare to walking up 20 stairs a day? I feel ready

Totally a secret layer there.

If people will pay attention to it, rich people will attempt to climb it

Someone get Alex Honnold on the phone!!

Not with that attitude it hasn’t

What’s remarkable about reddit is that out of the entire population of users who use this website there are probably only 2 or 3 who can actually summit this.

.

Very walk up able steps

Challenge accepted!!

good.

Well I always wondered how come there is no photo of the person/god living there up taken by some satellite or helicopter or whatever advanced tech we have these days?

As a mountaineer I respect that. Alot of peak baggers would love to just for a Wikipedia citation. Leave it alone just based off pics and the altitude it’s not something people will praise you for.

One doesn’t simply climb onto the roof of Shiva’s house.

Also, the reason it is not climbed(till now) is that you are not allowed to, with all due respect, the restrictions are acceptable, but since I live in the country to which Mt. Kailash is religious, they make claims like you can’t climb there due to some “mystical power”(God lives there) it makes hair and nails grow longer because you would age so fastly, you would lose the direction yada yada.

Thousands of pilgrims fly over it for sightseeing by chopper every year via Nepal. There are many helicopter companies running just for this purpose. The majority of the pilgrims are Indians with deep pockets.

Recently one helicopter company has announced an IPO, too. It’s getting bigger.

I have always assumed that even if you had government permission you would not be able to hire Sherpas. Possibly for the rest of your life if you tried without them.
