My first go-to is fine steel wool. And or with baking soda. Next is fine Scotch-Brite disk in cordless drill. Cleaning it off is easiest part, keeping it from reoccurring is more difficult part. An oil or wax coating will soon evaporate. For long term, I use Sta-Bil Rust stopper.

Last resort. 10% phosphoric acid. Try it first on a hidden area.

We had the same issue. We soaked it in evaporust, sanded it down spray painted it and then added clear coat. It was not perfect but we were able to save it from rusting further
