Antelope Island, Utah: A Hidden Gem in the Great Salt Lake
As I stepped out of my car and onto the rustic parking lot of Antelope Island State Park, the warm Utah sun beating down on my face, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and adventure. The vast expanse of the Great Salt Lake stretched out before me, its salt-crusted shores and snow-capped mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop for the day’s escapade. With my car, equipped with a 1/5s camera shutter speed, I was ready to capture the natural beauty of this often-overlooked gem.
As I made my way off the parking lot, I was greeted by the sound of free-roaming bison, their gentle beasts munching on the lush vegetation that dotted the island’s hills. I couldnushed my camera, weaving in and out of the scrubby brush, and snapped a series of shots as they trotted lazily across my path. The slow shutter speed allowed the camera to blur the bison’s movements, capturing the serene essence of their gentle gait.
Next, I headed to the southern end of the island, where the beaches meet the lake’s crystal-clear waters. The wind whipped my hair into a frenzy as I framed a shot of the Antelope CreekInlet, where the lake’s waters flow in and out with the tides. I experimented with the slow shutter speed, capturing the whirlpools and rippling waves that danced across the surface. The result was a mesmerizing display of movement and energy, as if the lake itself were alive.
As I wandered along the shoreline, I stumbled upon a thriving colony of Antelope Island’s signature field mice, their tiny paws scurrying across the sand as they foraged for seeds and insects. I crept closer, not wanting to startle them, and snapped a series of shots as they darted about, their brown fur blending seamlessly into the surrounding dunes. The 1/5s shutter speed allowed me to freeze their frantic movements, capturing the frantic energy of these tiny creatures.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to the parking lot, my camera rolling with a sense of satisfaction. Antelope Island, with its unique blend of rolling hills, rocky shores, and wildlife, had left me in awe. The 1/5s shutter speed had allowed me to capture the soft, dreamy quality of the island’s landscape, as well as the lively movements of its inhabitants. As I drove off into the sunset, bound for my next adventure, I knew that Antelope Island would remain etched in my memory as a special place, one that spoke to the beauty and wildness of the American West.

Hi all, I took this the other day while my wife drove us home from Antelope Island. I used a shutter speed of 1/5s to blur out the foreground and simplify. The mountain is far enough away to retain more detail and become the focus of the shot. Let me know what you think.
