The problem is that if you lack the willpower, it would be easy to start using the patch without running. Then taking up smoking

My ex used to do this to me. Except she would put them on me when I slept at her place so that I would get addicted to sleeping with her.
Found out a couple years into the relationship when she joking told her friends at a party how she got us to move in together

Well pure nicotine, not used habitually or smoked, is supposed to increase focus, concentration and release dopamine. I can see this being beneficial as a long distance runner, but only when he uses it on the long runs or races for performance. Also, learn wtf gaslighting means.

I started up nicotine at 47, just the lozenges (without aspartame). Funnily enough, there’s not a lot of studies in never-smokers, but nicotine has been shown to decrease risk of dementia, reduce inflammation, and even (in rats) help with insulin resistance. I don’t think it’s carcinogenic on its own, but I guess we’ll find out. My memory has been problematic for a while, and who the fuck can afford healthcare. Or even find a doctor that will take you seriously. So we’ll see how it goes.

I mean it’s just positive reinforcement. Gaslighting is a term for abuse that I won’t get into but honestly I hate that it’s casually thrown around when abuse victims who are gaslit struggle to be heard
On the subject of this being positive reinforcement: people think because it has “positive” in it it means add a good thing but “positive” just means something was added. In this case to reinforce the action of running. He added something he liked at the end – regardless of whether it’s good or not – and it increased his motivation to run.
But that’s why, say, spanking, isn’t “negative reinforcement” but positive punishment. Because you’re ADDING the negative stimulus to reduce a behavior (reinforcement is increasing a behavior while punishment is reducing). Another positive punishment is touching a red hot stove and getting burned.
(I’m ignoring the fact that spanking doesn’t actually work at all, it’s literally just abuse which has been shown time and time again with studies but I’m just using it as an example of another “positive” action that isn’t good, it’s just adding something).

I quit smoking for about two years and was running about 70 miles a week training for marathons and ultra marathons. We would taper before the races and drop our miles down to about 30 a week before the race. I would start getting withdrawals and my mouth would water with cravings for a cigarette every time.
