It would make more sense to bring light to the fact that Shakespeare popularized most of the modern tropes that we have today.

I once heard Tolkien called equivalent to Mt Fuji (in Japanese landscapes) in the fantasy genre.
Everything either derives from/references it or makes a deliberate choice not to to make some point or other, but it always relates back to it…

You’re talking about completely different things though. Lovecraft’s proto-scifi/weird fiction nor Poe’s gothic tinged horror sure aren’t classical fantasy literature. Not to mention they came before Tolkien, especially Poe. Lovecraft’s first published story “The Alchemist” was in 1916. I say this as a fan of all three writers, and having all three of theirs books on my shelf.
