Lost my wallet, someone returned it to the police, all cards/cash were in it except for my drivers license.

Make sure to still report your cards as lost. Someone could have copied the numbers and put them back hoping to use it a few months down the line when you’re not paying attention.

The police might have taken it out to identify the owner of the wallet and forgotten to put it back again… maybe

Careful, a License has your name, address & DOB. You don’t want someone stealing your identity
Potential Identity Theft. Freeze your accounts at credit bureaus, cancel your cards, and report it to the IRS/CRA.
Oddly enough, that ID is going to show that you are now the largest alcohol purchaser around the local high school.

I would assume the police probably took your drivers license out to look you up and never put it back in the wallet.
Please visit each of the three credit bureaus and freeze your credit until you need to use it. This will prevent accounts being opened in your name, and it is all free. You can also do a temp unfreeze and after the date, they will refreeze your credit.

Freezing only prevents the opening of new credit cards/loans and possible the ability to ask for an increase in credit line. Furthermore, websites like Credit Karma will still work and be able to access your credit with a freeze in place.
Change your cards anyways. It’s easy to copy them for online uses
so either you are going to be the victim of fraud, a kid that looks vaguly like OP is going to be able to buy beer now, or whoever found the wallet liked the look of you and wanted a keepsake.

Drivers license is pretty dope.
My mother & I have both returned lost wallets.
If you drop a license in a post office box USPS will mail it back to the address on the ID. Maybe they did that in case you never went to the police station to pick up your wallet (I wouldn’t have for a lost wallet tbh).

Report all of it as stolen anyway. They could have written down your card numbers. Report your license as stolen so you don’t catch any blowback if the dude decides to use your license for anything. Get all of the cards replaced and lock them until you do.
When I lost mine, it was handed in to the polis an they sent it back to DVLA to prevent identity theft.

Crazy. I would stay vigilant and freeze all of your accounts like everyone else has suggested and keep an eye on your credit.
Ask the police they probably took it out to get ahold of you and it’s on someone’s desk.
Look for an underage kid that looks like you and seems a bit shady.
That’s more worrying, licence is linked to identity theft and opening loans/banks accounts, etc. That’s more than just bank cards and cash.
Even if you’re not aware or alerted. The process is simple in other countries. You should report it so the intelligence services knows and prevent others from mis-using it. Also you’re protecting yourself in future for any bills/loans you did not open
