That meteor is only big enough to wipe out a city (if it were to impact in the city). Most likely even if it does hit the earth it will land in the ocean. Sorry.

We had a good run. Just hope it directly hits the underground Bunkers of the “elites” so they biff it first.

I mean I’ve seen figures like 1/82. That’s a 1.2% chance. There is non-zero chance it could potentially hit us.
I’m pretty sure that has been the case for literally every asteroid fly by ever.
What it probably is, is that the object is distant enough that scientists haven’t been able to accurately map its course fully, or there may be some particular force that will act on it that hasn’t yet that they are awaiting to see.
And even if I’m wrong and the chance goes up, the chance itself is still unbelievably small, and even if it was imminent then that just means it won’t be my problem much longer lol.
Jokes aside, we’ll figure it out as we go. But the amount of panic I’ve seen over this is wild. You throw out a 1% chance or a 1/83 figure and it’s siddenly like people forgot that that means it’s 98.8% likely to not hit us.

Historically, the chances progressively increase before falling under 1 in 1000000 chance. And even if it hits, its physical characteristics and composition makes it more likely to airburst (like the Tunguska event) rather than an actual impact.

Asteroid 2024 yr4 is around ~100 meters (328 feet) in diameter, so the most it can do is level a city or two depending on where it hits, and we are narrowing down it’s trajectory. If it does hit earth, we will know exactly where it will land, so we can easily evacuate ground-zero given a few years of warning.

Twice a year, June/July & October/November, earth passes through the Taurid meteor stream. The Tunguska event of 1908 perfectly lines up with this, and it’s likely it happened on a larger scale between 12,900 and 11,600 years ago and ended the ice age. We’re in a shooting gallery, just hoping we don’t get hit.

It’s one of those things where it is either going to miss us and so it’s not my problem, or it’s going to hit us and I won’t have a problem for very long. Not like I have any influence over it anyway, I’m not a rocket dentist.
