I work for my cities public works department and we consider this “illicit dumping” which is serious. You can call the city and report it as such and the city must come out and run a report and it will most likely result in a fine AND cleanup.

Head to your local hardware store and grab a decent sized bin or bucket. It looks like they dump the oil in the same place each time, so catch as much of it as possible.
After you’ve got a good amount, return it to them through their letterbox.

Line the area with potted plants. Let them dump it again. Call the police for destruction of personal property. Problem solved and no one gets hurt.

What are the littering laws in your area? Document everything. Anything that you need to pay for (including your time) could be used to sue the upstairs neighbor. Not to get your money back, but to give to the police to leverage against the neighbor. Littering is pretty strict where I live. If I don’t dispose of my used oil, whether it cooking oil or engine, I can be fined $100’s to $1000’s. And yes, that includes cooking oil.

First if all, that can cause damage to you guy’s on first and second floor, its hot oil or just oil. Second of all, property damage. Third of all, environmental damage. Fourth of all, damage to wildlife. I would leave them and ANGRY NOTE ANGRY warning on their door threatening to contact the police if they tried this again. The fact that the landlord won’t do shit angers me.

WTF??? That’s insane. I can’t believe your building manager is allowing this. Have you spoken to the neighbor directly and explained that their oil is going all over your patio area and your furniture? Maybe they don’t realize it and would be receptive to a respectful conversation about it.

As others have said, start getting everything in writing.
If they have a Google review or other review pages, post this picture with a one-star review. Make a note that you’re willing to modify it once the problem is rectified, but you do not have faith that the company is going to do it. Make it all factual without emotional overtone (use ChatGpt if you want to make it super easy).

Get some dry sweep. The kind used to clean up automotive oil. Soaks up great and cleans easy with a broom. Some cat litter works pretty good as well. The oil in the dirt you would have to dig up though.

It would probably be a bad idea to place a bucket there to catch it and then later pour it onto their entry door while they are away, maybe get it under the gap at the bottom.

Time to call your local department of health and report improper disposal. It’s not on the same level environmentally as dumping used motor oil, but it’s not good either.
Sufficient_Cow_6152

Set up a security camera inside the back door facing the patio to record the oil being dropped.
EMAIL, don’t just talk to, the property manager about this issue referencing your conversation with her. This way there’s a record of your complaint. Include your pics in the email.
If you’re part of a HOA, go to the next meeting and bring this all up citing the slipping hazard, as well as the possibility of extreme injury from hot oil being dumped on you if you’re outside on your patio.
File a report with the police for property damage. They probably won’t do anything as far as any charges go but you will have a report on file if you need it in case of retaliation.
Or, you can try catch as much of it in a big container, pour it into a plastic bag and put it in the fridge/freezer til it coagulates. Peel off the bag and throw the chunks back up there on a warm day. Aim for any seat cushions they may have up there.

Sucks your landlord hasn’t done anything direct about it. Hopefully the continued occurrences prompt action. This can’t be legal though, I’m sure there are environmental protection law that ban this sort of thing (I guess could depend where you are). Suggest maybe reporting to the city or local environmental agency?

Does your area have littering laws? Call the police non emergency line.
If you get hit or splashed by their dump it could be assault.
If your property is damaged, it could be mischief/destruction of property.
Either way the point is to get the police to talk to the neighbourbin hopes that this stops.
Your milage may vary on police being helpful vs harmful so please only do this if locally the police are known for being helpful.

that is disgusting
Were you laying seige to them by any chance.?
This is actually an EPA violation; you are not allowed to dump cooking oil any old place. Tell your lazy landlord you’re contacting the EPA (assuming you’re in the US…you may also have similar laws if outside the US.) That may encourage him to get moving on cleaning this up and doing something about the gross pigs who live above you. https://safewayusedoil.com/2024/06/the-cost-of-neglecting-used-oil-disposal-financial-penalties-and-environmental-risks/#:~:text=The%20Environmental%20Protection%20Agency%20(EPA,the%20severity%20of%20the%20infraction.
