Matt Damon + getting lost = great cinema

Production has officially begun!

It’s out July 17, 2026

Full Cast:

* Matt Damon as Odysseus
* Tom Holland
* Anne Hathaway
* Zendaya
* Lupita Nyong’o
* Robert Pattinson
* Charlize Theron
* Jon Bernthal
* Benny Safdie
* John Leguizamo
* Elliot Page
* Himesh Patel
* Bill Irwin
* Samantha Morton
* Jesse Garcia
* Will Yun Lee
* Mia Goth
* Corey Hawkins
* Nick Tarabay
* Jimmy Gonzales
* Maurice Compte

As a side, do we think that Pattinson or Bernthal is playing Antinous? I feel like either would be good, but a douchey suitor trying to get with someoneโ€™s widow seems like a role that was born for Bernthal

Sean Bean will always be my Odysseus

So it looks like he is going for the traditional Greek setting rather than a modern interpretation. Even more excited for it now.

That was fast !

โ€œfackin cyclahps came at me so i took his facken eye outโ€

I really would’ve loved it if they’d gone for more of a Mycenaean look for the costuming rather than the typical Classical Greek look we’ve come to know.

Boar’s tusk helmets, goofy conical plate [armor]comment image), axes, cow hide shields, etc. Something more Bronze Age, when the story was (presumably) set, rather than Classical Iron Age, when the story was composed.

At least the armor looks more bronze than iron.

EDIT: to be clear, the wishlist above was always unlikely. I’m mostly just happy we’re getting more Sword & Sandal movies. We’ve very little of those of any kind of quality for like 20 years. Seems to be changing a bit in a post Gladiator II market.

The shit of this is Ralph Fiennes played Odysseus in a movie called The Return and he looked the part WAY more.

So is he playing old Odysseus and Tom Holland playing young Odysseus?

Honestly I would’ve like a less recognizable cast for this.

Oh wow, he’s adapting this straight? Was convinced there was gonna be a twist. Then again, if anyone can nail sword and sandal on their first try… it’s Nolan.

Kind of wish Nolan had cast someone unknown. I just see Matt Damon in a helmet

This is petty of me, but I’m endlessly frustrated by these horribly inaccurate helmets for Greek soldiers. The only evidence that Greeks wore helmets like the one he’s wearing in the image would have been from Sparta circa the Persian wars, long time after the events of the Odyssey. However, every depiction of Greek helmets of this nature has the plumes going transverse across the head, not front to back as we see here.

But what really grinds my gears is that Homer literally describes Odysseus’ helmet in the Iliad. It’s right there in the god damn book that his helmet is a boar tusk helmet like this:comment image

“Hey Calypso, do you rememba where I pahked my fackin trireme? It was right heah a minute ago.”

I gotta stay alive till then

Thatโ€™s just Matt Damon in an Ancient Greek helmet

Wow it started production already?

I guess Zendaya won’t have too big of a role because I can’t see how she would juggle filming for Euphoria (which is also filming right now) + Dune 3 and this one all at once…

The battle for the Oscar tech categories between The Odyssey and Dune: Messiah is gonna be biblical

Can’t wait for the Cyclops to ask his name and he says “mAtT dAmOn… I mean nobody”

Canโ€™t wait to see Affleck as the Cyclops yelling โ€Closaaaโ€ to him

same energy as the last samurai

No matter what role he plays, all I ever see is Matt Damon. I mean… I like him, but he always looks kinda weird in costumes. Like a child playing dress up.

Wrong type of helmet; the Iliad actually describes Odysseus helmet,

>Meriones gave to Odysseus a bow and a quiver and a sword, and Odysseus placed on his head a leather cap
made of hide. On the inside many leather straps were stretched tight, and on the outside white tusks from a white-tusked boar were arrayed one after another, well and skillfully. And in the middle there was a layer of felt fastened to it. โ€” Iliad 10.265

He doesnโ€™t look Greek at all honestly.

Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s gonna be great, but Matt Damon? Hmph.

They couldn’t get *Sean Bean* back because they can’t kill him off for the plot.

Iโ€™m just glad he hasnโ€™t went the Hemsworth route and gotten super jacked for this role.

Spoiler alert: folks in antiquity (even if itโ€™s fictional) didnโ€™t look like CrossFit maniacs.

Stunned by the sheer Greekness of this man

They could have picked a better lead

He’s going to look weird flying a helicopter.

I’m so disappointed Nolan is following the tipical hollywood bs representation of the greek helmets during the bronze age. These corinthian helmets only appeared more than 500 years later.

I’m already sick of this movie just from the endless cast list postings.

As I said in another thread, as a former classicist who spent a very long time studying The Odyssey (in Greek), I really hope this doesnโ€™t suck.

From looking at this still, my first instinct is that Chris Nolan is still not improving his cinematography and this movie seems like the type that needs to have an epic wide-screen look and be lit like a timeless piece

Instead we are going to get an IMAX that is going to move like as if it’s a handheld camera and there isn’t going to be a single hard shadow to be found, aren’t we?

I would have casted Oscar Isaac, but what do I know.

my swords wicked shaap
