Inglorious Basterds was especially egregious

it’s not a rule but this is often from media being 5.1 being outputted through stereo speakers. when you watch on tv there’s no center channel and that’s where most dialogue comes out of. so, to compensate we turn up the volume to hear it. but sound effects come out of the left and right channels, which tv’s do have; being stereo. so now you’re getting the actual volume you have it turned up to.

you’d think by now tv’s would be compensating for this as it’s not hard. what you can do is look though the settings on whatever you’re playing the media with and look for some sort of downmix to stereo option.
