This insert is preventing the top cube from being 13×13″, so an item I have just barely cannot fit (an OG Xbox). I think I can cut the top part off since it’s not supporting anything. It’s prolly MDF, but how should I cut it? Box cutter? Hacksaw? I don’t have any access to shop machines unfortunately

Cutting an IKEA Kallax Insert: A Step-by-Step Guide

The IKEA Kallax is a popular shelving unit known for its versatility and customization options. One of the ways to customize your Kallax is by cutting the inserts to fit your specific storage needs. However, cutting an IKEA Kallax insert can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not familiar with DIY projects. In this article, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to cut an IKEA Kallax insert like a pro.

Before You Start

Before you begin cutting your Kallax insert, make sure you have the following:

  • A Kallax insert (you can purchase additional inserts separately or reuse an old one)
  • A ruler or straightedge
  • A pencil or marker
  • A utility knife or craft knife
  • A cutting mat or other protective surface
  • A ruler or measuring tape

Measuring and Marking

To ensure accurate cuts, start by measuring the insert and the area where you want to place the cut. Measure the length, width, and any obstructions (such as shelves or brackets) that may affect your cut. Use a pencil or marker to mark the measurements on the insert.

Choosing the Right Cutting Tool

For cutting an IKEA Kallax insert, a utility knife or craft knife is the best option. These types of knives are designed for precision cutting and are gentle on the insert’s surface. Avoid using power tools, such as a saw or a drill, as they can damage the insert or create uneven edges.

Cutting the Insert

Place the insert on a cutting mat or other protective surface. Hold the knife at a 45-degree angle and start cutting along the marked line. Apply gentle to moderate pressure, depending on the thickness of the insert. Cut slowly and steadily, using a smooth, even motion.

Tips and Tricks

  • To prevent the insert from shifting during cutting, use a clamp or a heavy object to hold it in place.
  • If you’re cutting a curved or irregular shape, use a curved or angled cutting tool, such as a jigsaw or a coping saw.
  • To avoid chipping or cracking the insert, cut slowly and carefully, and avoid applying too much pressure.
  • If you’re not comfortable cutting the insert yourself, consider hiring a professional or seeking assistance from a DIY expert.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve cut the insert, use a file or sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or burrs. This will help prevent damage to the surrounding surfaces and ensure a clean, professional finish.

Conclusion

Cutting an IKEA Kallax insert may seem intimidating, but with the right tools and techniques, you can achieve professional-looking results. By following these steps and tips, you’ll be able to customize your Kallax to fit your unique storage needs and add a personal touch to your home or office. Remember to measure carefully, cut slowly and carefully, and use the right tools to ensure a smooth, successful process. Happy cutting!
