Had a very similar situation that happened regularly. Was told to park my car in an alley with homeless people. They were nice, but I paid them off daily with food/money/kind gestures. Too many late convos with some very disturbed people that were interesting.
All fun and games until the crackhead gets post-OD clarity and unlocks Anger Issues lv. 1, and he sees you laughing at him.

I had a classmate like this in middle school, dude dented metal lockers & made shivs out of sharpies in welding class, of course i was chill enough with him in school if he said whats up or hello in the hallways, best to not anger the sharks
Funny part is Darvin is a crack head

Had this happen to me in Vegas, crackhead had been going up and down an escalator sharpening a long piece of plastic against the guardrails, I went down the escalator with him while he was sharpening it and he looks at me and his sharpened stick and says something like “damn brother, look how sharp it’s getting! Isn’t that fucking sick?” And all I can say is “yeah bro that’s really cool 👀” he kept circling the escalator when I left, but my guy was tweaking hard doing insane property damage to that escalator
