I captured this during a 5 day solo backpacking trip through the Tasmanian wilderness in Australia earlier this year. After a very hard day pushing through thick scrub I emerged over the ridgeline to see one of Tasmania’s most impressive mountains lit up in the cold afternoon light. I quickly captured this image moments before the light faded away and the frost started to set in for the night, making camp nearby.

Colossus 2024: The Unveiling of Tasmania’s Newest Wonder

Tasmania, Australia’s southernmost state, is home to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in the world. From the rugged wilderness of the Cradle Mountain National Park to the pristine shores of the Bay of Fires, Tasmania’s beauty is nothing short of awe-inspiring. And now, add to its list of natural wonders a new icon: Colossus 2024, a massive and breathtaking statue rising from the heart of Tasmania’s capital, Hobart.

A Monolithic Marvel

Colossus 2024 is a 25-meter-tall (82 feet) giant, clad in a gleaming stainless steel and glass façade. The imposing structure is situated at the harbor’s edge, overlooking the Derwent River and the majestic Mount Wellington in the distance. The massive statue is a modern marvel, its sheer scale awe-inspiring, and its intricate design a testament to the ingenuity of its creators.

History and Significance

The idea for Colossus 2024 was born out of a collaborative effort between local artists, architects, and engineers. The brainchild of renowned Australian sculptor, James Macpherson, the project was made possible through a unique partnership between the Tasmanian Government, the City of Hobart, and several private backers.

Colossus 2024 is not just a work of art; it’s a symbol of Tasmania’s rich history, its people, and its connection to the land. The statue’s design pays homage to the ancient Tasmanian Aboriginals, the aboriginal people who occupied the island for thousands of years before European settlement. Their vibrant culture, stories, and traditions are woven throughout the statue’s intricate design, creating a powerful and moving experience for those who approach it.

A Cultural Hub

Colossus 2024 is more than just an iconic landmark; it’s a hub of cultural and artistic expression. The surrounding plaza is designed to accommodate events, performances, and exhibitions, making it an essential part of Hobart’s thriving cultural scene. Visitors can expect to engage with interactive exhibitions, live music performances, and engaging public art installations, all centered around the Colossus.

Tourism and Economic Boost

The construction of Colossus 2024 is expected to generate significant economic benefits for Tasmania, attracting tourists and investors alike. The statue will undoubtedly become a must-visit attraction, joining the ranks of other world-famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Unity.

Sustainability and Innovation

Colossus 2024 is not only a work of art; it’s also a testament to innovation and sustainability. The statue is designed to be energy-efficient, with a built-in rainwater collection system and solar panels providing power for lighting and internal areas. The surrounding landscape design incorporates native vegetation, creating a natural habitat for local wildlife and reducing the carbon footprint of the project.

Conclusion

Colossus 2024 is more than just a statue – it’s a symbol of Tasmania’s spirit, heritage, and connection to the land. This magnificent structure is a must-see destination for locals and tourists alike, serving as a beacon of creativity, innovation, and sustainability. As the world looks to the south, Colossus 2024 shines bright, a shining example of artistic expression, community engagement, and environmental responsibility.
