I used to work many aspects of insurance for ambulance transportation, including denials. I fought with UHC for weeks and weeks because they continually denied my request for repetitive transportation services for a lady who needed to be transported to dialysis three times a week. She had to go by stretcher because she, quite literally, had no legs and half a pelvis. UHC insisted she could go via wheelchair van, with a singular lap belt over her actually non-existent lap.
Fuck UHC. Fuck health insurance. That side of things jaded me more than any patient care role ever did.

Obligatory fuck optum. Worst pregnancy and postpartum care ever. The only place I’ve seen where an OB looked like she hated pregnant women with every fibre of her soul. The rest of them are just incompetent or swarmed by the amount of patients they now have to see in a day.
It took me 3 weeks to receive an anti-nausea medication because optum doctor who provided the prescription did not supply my insurance with a pre-approval form then ditched all attempts at contacting him.

Just got back from vacation, with a mailbox full—of UHC letters telling us to pick a PCP (spoiler alert; they assigned us our usual anyway). 48 letters—1 per person on the same plan, sent every day from dec 9-20. There should be a fine for wasting this much paper.

Same here. In 2023 I’ve had to process literally over a thousand denials from UHC for services rendered to patients- the same services the patients have been routinely getting for years and the insurance paid prior and now all of a sudden they are pending payment because they deem it not medically necessary. I have provided medical documentation, letter of medical necessity and other supporting clinical information only for them to deny it AGAIN several months later.

I’m not surprised. My friend is a therapist and said she no longer could deal with insurance because they were CONSTANTLY changing the process, would frequently deny claims (causing her to sit on the phone for hours), and in one case tried to pay her in Visa gift cards.

I got a similar stack of them denying me PET scans after I’ve found 3 lumps in my throat/neck area.
They deem it unnecessary because I’ve not lost a significant amount of weight, therefore it cannot be cancer.
It’s been a year, and I’m still worried it is cancer and spreading in my body, but I cannot afford 50k for scans and tests, I’m on my dad’s insurance and in college 🙂

I will say this on every Insurance I see or whenever I talk to a person about insurance. Insurance is a scam in its current form. PERIOD.
My old insurance I had with my company I have for 12 years. $700 a month average between my cost and company cost. I never went to the DR because I never was sick.
I used it one time because they needed to do a biopsy, cost me thousands of dollars out of pocket.
They made almost 100k off monthly payments and when I finally used it, it cost me many more thousands plus I still had to fight that it was “necessary”.
Someone hit my parents car and totaled it. The person who hit it was under the influence of pills. Her insurance gave my family , who could barely afford food, $2,500 for it. How TF are they supposed to replace it for $2500 when they can’t afford a car payment.

Congrats on getting paid!
I’m fighting these fuckers to pay out of network claims. They claim they never receive them, then have me refile. Their website gives me confirmation numbers that the customer service reps say don’t exist in their system. It’s been a year of this shit and now they’re saying it’s too late. They haven’t paid any claims for over a year.

Overwhelming with bureaucracy, complexity and esoteric knowledge (ever noticed how you’re expected to know the law, which is written in a language only lawyers know how to read?) is how these kinds of systems survive/thrive/dominate.

I have to get pre-certification/ authorizations for substance use recovery patients for medical detox…I could go on and on but I’ve exclaimed to my coworkers in the past, prior to the shooting, to never let me sign up with united Healthcare / optum as the healthplan (or optum as the IPA) because of how fucking ridiculous their screening and tactics are to hang up on you, multiple times, transfer you repeatedly, deny your patient care or only Auth a lower level of care or say that while our facility is in network and contracted, the MD is not so the patient will incur significant costs due to mds billing exclusively….. freaking HATE THEM in particular above all other health plans. Just trying to help the patient and the community, they think it’s better to have an alcoholic continue to drink and drive then Auth them for a 3 day detox and if they come in overly inebriated they don’t have withdrawal symptoms so they don’t need our care… but they drink a liter of vodka daily for 4 years you dumb mother fuckers…

I’m watching this “Survive Alaska for a cash prize” show on Netflix and like ~75% of the contestants are either in medical debt, are hoping to pay off relatives medical debt, or have untreated medical problems personally. 2 of 16 so far have said they’re going to spend the money on non-cosmetic surgeries. The remaining % are all in their 20s

Honest question from a non-american. Why don’t you guys change insurance? Is it because of the accumulated score or was it a forced choice? As I always thought you can choose an insurance company but if UHC is treating u like so why didn’t you switch
