Two of the dead were protesting, two were just walking past to get somewhere else on campus.

This was so tragic and unnecessary I was curious about the victims , here’s info i googled
The victims of the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970 were Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder. All four were students at Kent State University.
Allison Krause
* 19 years old, freshman in the Honors College at Pittsburgh, PA
* Died from a chest wound
Jeffrey Miller
* 20 years old, sophomore in Psychology from Plainview, Long Island (NY)
* Died from a head wound
Sandra Scheuer
* 20 years old, junior in Speech & Hearing Therapy from Youngstown, OH
* Died from a neck wound
William Schroeder
* 19 years old, sophomore in Psychology from Lorain, OH
* Died from a chest wound
* Member of the campus ROTC battalion
Nine other students were wounded in the shootings. Dean Kahler was permanently paralyzed from his injuries. The Ohio National Guard shot the unarmed students while some were protesting the war and others were passing by. The guards fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds.

What a lot of people today forget about the incident.. A Gallup poll taken the day after the shootings reportedly showed that 58 percent of respondents blamed the students, 11 percent blamed the National Guard, and 31 percent expressed no opinion on the incident.

I’ve never this perspective before. I had assumed there were several hundred, close to a thousand or so. So much controlled violence for a crowd this size. So sad.

Depressing how little was learned from this event. Boomers rallied against it for a decade then turned into the very thing they hated.

Two years later Nixon would be re-elected by one of the largest margins in American history. The Governor of Ohio at the time Jim Rhodes didn’t run for reelection that happened later that same year and was succeeded by a Democrat, but four years later Rhodes ran for a third non-consecutive term and defeated that very same Democrat.

The worst part for me was the reaction to the shooting with the vast majority of the US blaming the students. So many families disowned their kids because of the protests. The shooters never really faced justice.

This is why the new administration wants to be able to murder protestors.

Never forget as well that the general public reaction was that the killed kids had it coming.

People should be listening to the kinds of thing pols are saying right now. Trump would have no problem calling out the National Guard as a favor to someone who promises to put Trumps’ name on a university building in return for ‘repelling’ protesting students.

We’re going to see more events like this pop up during the next four years.
Remember, Trump wanted to shoot the BLM protesters in the legs.

I’ve done a lot of acid in that field. You can look through the bullet holes in a sculpture by Don Drumm.
Some of the guys from DEVO were there… so was Chrissie Hynde.
My entire life, this was such a horrific event that “woke people up”, and there were so many that vowed that nothing like this should/would ever happen again.
Then came that first trump presidency…

My Grandpas best man in his wedding is the guy who took the famous picture of the girl over the guy at Kent. Whole family went to Kent and I’ve visited it many times. Was surprised first time I went how little history there was on it.

This is my first time seeing a colorized photo of this tragedy.
In the post about the Tiananmen Square Pre-Massacre Photo, you see comments like “What massacre?” and a bunch of comments claiming it to be a “post from the CIA”.
The comments in this post appear to be more chill and talk about the tragedy.
Am I witnessing some online battle between US and China government paid trolls or are some people really that upset about TikTok possibly getting banned?

It’s kinda crazy how I’ve always seen black and white photos of this event, but seeing a color photo really makes it come home just how recent this was.

With that said, anyone notice the stark difference in the comments of this post compared to the comments in the recent post of the [Tiananmen Square Pre-Massacre Photo](https://old.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/1i49ryl/a_photo_of_tiananmen_square_before_the_massacre/)?
