I made my family embrace giving each other food/consumable gifts for Christmas, it’s been wonderful not having to find space for more clothes/junk every year.

Maybe you can be happy if you focus on the giving aspect. You can give in many ways, many of which have low or no cost. As I’ve aged, I have realized that I can get whatever I want for myself at any time, so why not focus on giving? And let me tell you, it has brought me probably MORE joy than I ever got receiving a gift (other than GameCube 2003).
I’m not suggesting depression is solved this easily, so please don’t read this in that way. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for my whole life, and I understand what you’re saying here because I have felt it too. Just throwing an option out there, if it’s accessible to you.

Christmas is for the children to be happy. Adults have to pretend to be happy. It’s our duty

It makes you sad. I am severely depressed, always, and go to friends to get high, drink beers, play games and talk shit. They expect nothing from me and I nothing off them. Life’s what you make it!
