Windows updates has traumatized people

Does anyone know why it actually just will refuse to shutdown and resets itself majority of the time?

It’s super annoying

Iโ€™ve been seeing this lately, but Iโ€™ve never had this problem ๐Ÿคจ

1 hour later: It turns back on on its own to complete updates.

One of the many reasons I disable updates and only allow them to happen when I specifically tell it to check for updates.

What a meme. Are we back in 2008?

I wonder if anyone has actually hovered over the thing and read the tooltip in there

Heh, yeah. That button has gotten me a few times too. It’ll actually do a full reboot to make sure the update applies and the operating system can reach the login screen, THEN it will shut down fully.

I never had the problem of it not shutting down. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

i dont know why people complain, for me it always worked, yes maybe it restarts to finalize update but eventually shuts down automatically after that

I see this posted a lot. However, since building my PC a year ago, it has always shut down. I might be part of a lucky few ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Same memes reposted over and over again

updates on the next boot anyways

PRAISE BE

I never press that buttons cause some shit happened that traumatized me

shutdown /g /t 0 /soft

Iโ€™m wondering if anybody here thatโ€™s never had this problem is because of something like they built their own PC, use a laptop, or use a prebuilt.

Personally Iโ€™ve seen it across desktops but not laptops.

Windows uploaded: “I’m always up to anything”

My computer will freeze so that I have to restart and update, and sometimes it just wakes itself up without warning. I hate updates!

Restarting is still better

Folks who dual booted and have not set Win as the primary OS know the struggle of waiting till the restart happens and manually selecting Win else the other OS will boot

See, I have no problem with that.

But straight out of the box it’s never woken up from sleep once.

When I press Update and restart it just shuts down. I guess they mixed options.

The restarting is part of the update process? Just because it restarts first doesn’t mean it won’t also shut down at the end.

On top of that, my PC has this special feature that it hard crashes on every shutdown after an update.

Only a power cycle will make it start again.

dnf update has never led to a restart or a shutdown so far just sayin .

Yup. Couple days ago I clicked โ€œupdate and shutdownโ€ and woke up the next day to my computer on lol

When I use this option, usually, my PC restarts once or twice to finish the followup steps that occur after the update part of the shutdown. Then it proceeds to shut down. I’ve never had it stay on afterwards.

as someone who updates my pc softwares on the regular i have never had major issues with updates or at least what im aware of, i may be just too stupid to understand stand what the โ€œmajor issueโ€ is and just view it as normal, i do notice some issues that annoy me with how things work but never been bothered enough to be a big deal

What is the problem with windows update? Why are people afraid of it.

I never understood it. Someone explain pls

WHAT??? SINCE WHEN????

It started happening when i switched from intel to a 9800x3d

Update and shut down always shut down the PC

Atleast towards the end

It’ll restart to update
And upon the completion of the update, will shut down the PC

That’s what it’s always done for me

Never had a problem with updates all my life, idk what y’all are always going on about.

Update and shutdown in my experience has a 30% chance of applying whatever update it is and shutting down cleanly. 60% chance of apply update -> restarting -> finishing update -> shuts down.

The remaining 10% of the time it will apply update -> restart -> finish update -> either 1) require a powercycle because its bricked or 2) be waiting at windows login screen.

I also put my PC to ‘sleep’ every night (so I don’t have to listen to the fans all night), and this also only seems to work about 60% of the time. 35% of the time it will go to sleep but only after it’s thought about it for a good 5mins. Then there is that rare 5% of the time when it just pretends you never clicked on sleep, and nothing happens.

This is one of the most frustrating things about pc’s, stuff changes how it works for no discernible reason on a whim of the computer gods. I’ve had updates where the pc properly shuts off afterward and also updates where it restarts instead and there’s no rhyme or reason to it.

The latest weirdness from my computer is games are starting up underneath steam but over firefox (widescreen, steam is on the left and firefox is in the middle). For no reason, it just decided to start doing so a couple days ago. It doesn’t hurt anything and all I need to do is click on the game screen to raise it to the top level, but Why?

I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY!!!

Nah it’ll say installing updates, restart, do the boot up again, and then shut down.

I just disabled updates permanently. Thanks for reminding me that they exist lol

It restarts and never shuts down, just sits on a log in screen.

Linux doesnโ€™t have that problem

Fun fact, it actually DOES restart before shutting down! I dual boot NixOS and Windows, and my default is NixOS. While booted in Windows I clicked this “update and shutdown”.. and to my surprise the next day found my PC still on and booted into Linux. A few days later I rebooted into Windows.. and THEN Windows shutdown my PC while booting up lol.

So basically, clicking “update and shutdown” is actually “update, reboot, then shutdown”. Windows remembers that during the next bootup, it should shutdown right after.

>Shut down without updating

>Updates anyway

It happened to me in the last update.. I am still in shock ๐Ÿ’€
