Jesus was out there turning water into wine. Not exactly the poster child for sobriety.

I was a solid C, C- student. The only subjects I got A’s or B’s in were art, PE, and guitar class.
I have a passion for stories and film, so I ended up going to film school. I worked HARD, countless all nighters, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, staying completely sober (I love weed, but I went to school to learn not to party and waste my time). At the end of my program, I finished with a 3.4 GPA, I was soo so so proud of myself. I proved to myself that if I tried, if I cared, I could rank among some of the highest in my class.
My grandmother told me she “prayed every day that a miracle would happen that I’d be sucessful”. That comment took ALLthe wind out of my sails, and my struggle, my work, and my passion meant nothing because she thought about me before going to bed every night.
I was heartbroken, im already the black sheep, and I felt so completely alone in the moment.

How typical for God to take credit for something done specifically by a creature with free will.

It’s quite ironic how they praise someone who could turn water into wine for a year without alcohol.

I remember there being a critique of the Twelve Step program in that nonreligious people get failed out for not “feeling shameful/remorseful”
Like, if you go in and- (adhd Wikipedia break) Oh Jesus fuck you have to come to terms with a Higher Power. Nope.
Anyway there was a court case in one of the eastern states (I forget which) where the defendant was supposed to go through an addiction program as part of their plea deal. The prison only offered a/the Twelve Step program and the prisoner was challenging the prison for not offering options for addiction recovery. They were 100% for going through a program but being nonreligious felt that a program demanding you feel shame and submit yourself to a higher power wasn’t a productive approach.
I don’t remember the results of the court case

If I were to believe in God, I would have to believe that he created alcohol, and alcoholics to suffer from it.

If you believe Jesus is God, just remember that he went a wedding where the party drank so damn much that they ran out of booze, and then he gave them the equivalent of 3 bathtubs of more wine to keep the party going.

FWIW, there are agnostic/atheist AA groups, too. If you want to get sober but are turned off by the religious aspect, that is an option that’s out there.

It’s the weirdest shit ever with people like this too. People do bad shit? Not God’s fault because the bad people did it.
People do good shit and get something good? PRAISE GOD!

I beat cancer years back. My grandmother told me that God saved my life, and I told her “No, me going through half a dozen surgeries, me going through 2 years of Chemo and Radiation Therapy, and then Physical Therapy saved my life”

In 2008 I regrettably got a DUI. I had to attend classes and AA, as well as a few other punishments. In one of my class sessions, our counselor asked everyone about the first sip of alcohol they ever tried. Most said their parents gave them a sip as a teen. Then the counselor said “For many of you, I’m willing to bet it was your first communion”. God creates alcoholics. Not cures them. I’m 10 years sober, btw.
