[Image: Atlas Comet over the Sierras at Moonrise (2000×1390)]
As the world basks in the golden glow of the moon’s ascention, a celestial treat awaits the patient observer. Captured in this breathtaking photograph is the Atlas Comet, majestically soaring above the Sierra Nevada mountain range at the moment of moonrise. The scene unfolds like a canvas of wonder, where the stark beauty of the night sky converges with the rugged grandeur of the earth.
The Atlas Comet, officially designated as C/2016 R1 (PANSTARRS), is a rare and welcome visitor to our solar system. With a highly elliptical orbit, it spends most of its journey flung outward into the depths of interstellar space, only to return to the inner solar system once every 10,000 years. Its latest appearance in 2016 was met with widespread excitement and anticipation, as astronomers and sky enthusiasts alike scrambled to catch a glimpse of this rare celestial visitor.
In this remarkable photograph, the Atlas Comet appears as a bright, fuzzy streak across the sky, its wispy tail stretching out like a ghostly appendage. Against the backdrop of a deep blue sky, the comet’s yellowish hue seems to glow with an ethereal light, as if infused with the essence of the surrounding landscape. The Sierra Nevada mountains, with their snow-capped peaks and rugged silhouettes, serve as a dramatic counterpoint to the soft, lunar glow in the foreground.
The photographer’s keen eye has captured the fleeting moment of moonrise, when the moon, now just above the horizon, casts a warm, golden light over the scene. This light, affectionately known as "moon glow," imbues the landscape with a sense of serenity and tranquility, making the already-stunning comet appear even more otherworldly.
This photograph is more than just a documentation of a celestial event; it’s an homage to the infinite beauty, mystery, and awe-inspiring wonder of the universe. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of our place within the grand tapestry of space and time, and the tiny, yet significant, role we play in the grand ballet of celestial mechanics.
The Atlas Comet’s brief visit to our solar system serves as a poignant reminder of the awe-inspiring events that occur beyond our planet, and the importance of observing, respecting, and protecting our own ‘backyard’ in the cosmos. This photograph, with its breathtaking beauty and sense of wonder, stands as a testament to the enduring power of human curiosity and the importance of preserving our connection with the universe.
As we continue to gaze upon this rare and precious photograph, let us be inspired to acknowledge the vastness of the universe, and the majesty that lurks within its depths. For in the eternal dance of celestial bodies and terrestrial landscapes, we find ourselves reminded of our place within the grand narrative of the cosmos, and the boundless wonders that await us on the horizon.

Last fall a buddy and I went over to the Sierras to check out the foliage, do some day hiking, and try to catch the Atlas comet while it was still visible here in the northern hemisphere. This was from a short hike out to a cluster of lakes, where we set up and waited until dark. Shortly after sunset, we were able to see both the milky way and the comet visible with the naked eye, and shortly after that, the moon began to rise, illuminating Bear Spire and the rest.
Full disclosure, I ended up making a small adjustment to the direction of the comet in post in order to, IMO, improve the composition.
