My school went to three random letters, a number, then two more random letters in part to solve this problem. Unfortunately for my classmate he got sex4me and when he complained to the school they told him there was literally nothing they could do about it. It was quite the problem as his email kept getting spam filtered.

How does this happen? Something like automated account creation where it uses name and last name for it?

Referring to the Finger user information protocol (RFC 742). Unix systems used to have a client: `finger username`

We used the first two letters of the first and last name plus enrollment year. We had one person get an email starting with “nazi”… she was not too happy about it.
Wish she went to upper instead of central, but still a great email.

Wow, that takes me back to alt.shenanigans on the Usenet in the mid 90s. Hope Mary Emily Cummings is doing well, wherever she is!

I also went to central and had an email like that. In my third year, I suddenly started getting emails about classes and projects I had nothing to do with. Apparently, a new student had started with nearly my exact same name. Only difference was my middle name is Jean and hers is Jane. Everyone just assumed her email address was like everyone’s, last name and first two initials of first name. Her actual email address had the first three initials of our first name.
Coincidentally, that’s the same year that FingerMe started at central. I never personally knew her but had friends that did.

I’ve been working IT at a university for over 30 years. I worked with the programmer who developed our first account provisioning program. To avoid this issue, he started with George Carlin’s list of words you can’t say on TV to filter out.

A supplier I use blocks out most of your name when you place an order, using the first name first initial and the last 3 letters from your last name. Mine always turns out as “dick”

One of my favorite professors got assigned the email [email protected] they’ve since changed how they assign emails (he has been there for a while) but still clings to it 😀
