Unraveling the Mysteries of Glen Etive’s Enigmatic Currents
The Scottish Highlands are renowned for their breathtaking landscapes, ancient history, and rugged coastline. Among the many picturesque glens that dot this region, Glen Etive stands out for its captivating beauty and mysterious currents. Located in the heart of the Highlands, Glen Etive is a 5-mile-long glen carved by the River Etive, which flows into the Firth of Lorne. The glen is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with its stunning mountains, waterfalls, and picturesque lochs. However, beneath its serene surface, Glen Etive is home to a complex system of currents that have intrigued scientists and adventurers alike.
The Power of Geology
Glen Etive’s unique currents can be attributed to its unique geology. The glen is situated in the midst of a fault zone, where the ancient Caledonian Mountains have been pushed upwards by tectonic forces. This upheaval has created a jagged landscape of mountains, valleys, and lochs, which in turn influences the flow of the River Etive. The river’s course is marked by a series of rapids, waterfalls, and still pools, which affect the currents in unpredictable ways.
The Currents of Glen Etive
There are several distinct currents that flow through Glen Etive, each with its own characteristics and mysteries. The most prominent current is the Etive Torrent, a powerful and swift-moving flow that originates high up in the mountains and flows down the glen. This current is marked by a series of cascades and rapids, which create a mesmerizing display of white water and spray.
Another notable current is the Glen Loch, a slower-moving body of water that flows into the River Etive. This current is characterized by its tranquil beauty, with its crystal-clear waters and lush vegetation. The Glen Loch is a popular spot for kayaking and fishing, and its calm conditions make it an ideal destination for families and beginners.
The Whirlpool of the Falls
One of the most fascinating aspects of Glen Etive’s currents is the Whirlpool of the Falls, a mesmerizing phenomenon that occurs at the base of the river’s most prominent waterfall. The whirlpool is created by the contrasting speeds of the river above and below the falls, which creates a swirling motion that draws in debris and water. This natural phenomenon is a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts, who come to marvel at its beauty and complexity.
Conclusion
Glen Etive’s currents are a testament to the natural wonders of the Scottish Highlands. From the powerful Etive Torrent to the serene Glen Loch, each current has its own unique character and charm. Whether you’re an adventurer, scientist, or simply a nature lover, Glen Etive is a destination that has something to offer. As you explore the glen’s winding paths and dramatic landscapes, remember to pause and appreciate the intricate ballet of currents that flow beneath its surface.

Does it still count as a landscape if you use a drone?
I’m not so sure. To be honest, although I get shots I really like the look of with my drone, I’m not sure I feel as connected to the images I produce. Almost like I don’t feel responsible for them in some way.
I shoot a whole bunch of stuff such as travel landscape and street, normally land based (@inutopia if you’re curious) and I definitely derive more pleasure from a good land based shot than I do an air based one.
This was from the maiden flight with my new Mini 4, which I received as an upgrade from the insurance when my old one met its end in a loch. I’ve got to say, although I stand by what I said about the pictures, I really like the Mini 4 Pro. It has lots of small QoL upgrades over the Mini 3 Pro which make it , in my opinion, a much nicer drone to use.
Welp I now have a new phone screen thanks
Wow that is such an incredible shot
