How does this poll result seem accurate considering the numbers that voted for AFD?
Almost everything I have heard about European defense is about the politics, popularity or financing.
Where is the discussion about what this army is, how it works, where it is, how big it is? What is the command structure? Mandate?
The main reason it has not been created so far is that the member states distrust each other and have their own interests.
For example, the European army is often discussed with the West in mind, but the southern flank is being overlooked.
Until all parties reach a genuine agreement on cooperation and mutual trust, the creation of a European army will not move forward.
Establish the European army already! We’re tired of endless discussions. We want the European Union Armed Forces.
Well, I do not think we will see a european army per se soon….BUT we already see a lot of military consolidiation. Not to the degree we get some major weapons system for all of europe, like one type of tank, one type of personal weapon etc…..but at least it is going down from like 16 types of different systems of the same class to maybe 3 or 4.
I am a german professional soldier and i am against this. I ofc am pro working together very close to our EU allies, but i don’t see an EU army happening. Too many things that don’t work out. Payment, giving orders, serving for our constitution and our citizens by oath. Who fights and loses soldiers and who is just in the back, giving orders, organizing, supporting etc? You can’t make it fair.
They finally stopped using the national flags for the No-Options it seems, good.
1. Who would be the commander-in-chief?
2. How would chain of command work?
3. How would it be integrated with NATO?
4. How would it be funded?
5. How would the soldiers be recruited?
6. How would conscription work?
7. What would happen to national militaries?
Start with a European Air Force and logistics service ffs…

I’m from 🇷🇴 and I totally agree with that. I would go to war to defend any European country, and to defend our land.
Good that Germany supports forming a Euroarmy. Now what about the rest of the EU?
Honestly I think a joined command and more exercises and harmonizing between all the national armies would be a better route to take.

This would ensure that your contributions align with the broader goals of collective security and stability within the EU, while maintaining a balanced and accountable approach to defense capabilities. Strong European army standing together.
I grew up, when politics wasn’t even on my radar, thinking an EU Army was the most logical fucking conclusion for continental security.
It was only until my dad (old school Tory voter) gave me the usual points about sovereignty where I have since pivoted into having our own military still. We have a rich history and I guess it would be a shame, if anything, to give up our decision making ability to something else.
But as a contributing force? Fucking mount up EU — like, come one, it doesn’t have to be 100% of your armies.
Why can’t each member contribute 20% each for this EU Army — that can be ready for a rapid riposte to any threat — while the remaining 80%’s can be spoiled into gear should an existential threat actually occur.
The UK will also be backing you to the hilt at the moment.
This army is running low on weapons,how are you going to create it?

There is just zero political momentum for it. It would also mean, that each EU country would give up its military sovereignty towards EU institutions and who would become the commander in chief?. Nobody is going to do that. Certainly not with the current state of the EU. We need more progress with the EU integration. Like the EU passport or the EU constitution. We couldn’t even do that. Since than, the EU is just lethargically status quo. We can’t even change the veto mechanism and get rid of Orban.
Strategic mistake: it has to be EU armed forces.

This is very insightful. This means more people is in favour of an EU army than the AfD. What this means is that part of the AfD voters are pro-European.
European leaders should wake up and do some critical thinking on what problems concern these voters as much as to vote a far-right party, even if that means scrificing Europe’s unity. I am willing to be that bringing them back to traditional parties would not be that hard if they actually had the balls to speak about those issues.
Give it a cool name too. European continental army or something like that.
Any EU army will need the involvement of the UK and the burden will have to be equally split/ shared between the main parties and not a situation where the UK is doing more than its fair share and France isn’t.
Crazy they almost elect an anti-EU party and are debating remaining in the Schengen zone. One has to wonder if they know just the what the fuck they want!

Honestly, how is this even a discussion? Shit or get off the pot. The EU has been around like what, 30 years now? And no army? The whole world (except apparently Trump) sees how much of a threat Russia is… it’s way beyond time that the EU had a well armed, well funded, standing army… let’s goooooo

This will never happen. NATO serves this purpose. Just recreate new version without the USA. Europe is not the USA. It’s comprised of multiple countries, many of which don’t like each other much. Most are only in the EU not for altruistic reasons but because it helps them economically. Even if there was a movement for a European Army the wealthier countries would realize that they would bear the bulk of the cost so why not just put that spend into their own army which after all could be used to support another country if they so chose. Just like France is doing with her nuclear capabilities.
Good luck mobilizing it. We all saw the tantrum a few days ago when the idea of conscription was raised.

Most countries that are in favor of an EU army are just hoping that this would mean other countries will do the dirty work and they can hide behind them. I don’t mean this as criticism towards Germany. I literally think this is what the majority of citizens from any country think when they answer this.
Germany should build an army of its own first before worrying about others or requiring others to defend them. All this talk of European military cooperation is completely hollow if the loudest countries spend the least on national defense.
