How to Stack 2 Mattresses without Them Falling Off or Separating
Stacking two mattresses can be a convenient and space-saving solution for creating a plush and comfortable sleeping surface. However, it can be a challenge to keep the mattresses in place and prevent them from separating or falling off the bed frame. In this article, we’ll provide you with some tips and techniques on how to stack two mattresses successfully, ensuring a restful night’s sleep without any discomfort or worry.
Choosing the Right Mattresses
Before we dive into the stacking process, it’s essential to select the right mattresses. You’ll need two mattresses that are of similar size, material, and density to ensure a stable and even surface. Consider the following factors when choosing your mattresses:
- Size: Choose mattresses that are the same size, ideally twin, full, queen, or king. Make sure the mattresses are identical to ensure a snug fit and prevent shifting.
- Material: Select mattresses made from similar materials, such as memory foam, innerspring, or hybrid. This will help ensure they conform to each other’s shape and provide a comfortable sleeping surface.
- Density: Opt for mattresses with similar density levels to maintain consistency and prevent one mattress from sinking or sagging excessively.
Preparing the Bed Frame
Before stacking the mattresses, prepare the bed frame by ensuring it’s sturdy and level. Here are some tips:
- Sturdy Frame: Use a bed frame that can support the weight of two mattresses, considering the total weight of both mattresses, plus your body weight.
- Level Frame: Check the bed frame for levelness, adjusting it if necessary. An uneven frame can cause the mattresses to shift or slide off.
Stacking the Mattresses
Now that you’ve chosen the right mattresses and prepared the bed frame, it’s time to stack them. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Face Down: Place the second mattress face down on top of the first mattress. This will prevent the mattress surfaces from scratching or sticking together.
- Secure the Top: Use bed risers, foam toppers, or non-slip pads to prevent the top mattress from slipping or sliding off the bottom one.
- Align the Sides: Ensure the sides of the two mattresses are aligned carefully, avoiding gaps or spaces that can cause the mattresses to shift.
- Add Support: Use box springs or bed foundation support systems to provide extra support and prevent the mattresses from sagging or bowing.
Tips and Tricks
To ensure your stacked mattresses stay in place and provide a comfortable sleeping surface, follow these additional tips:
- Rotate Regularly: Rotate the mattresses regularly to maintain their shape and prevent wear and tear.
- Use Bed Sheets: Use bed sheets that are designed for two mattresses, such as split-top or fitted sheets, to prevent the mattresses from shifting.
- Monitor the Mattresses: Check the mattresses regularly for signs of wear, such as sagging or excessive wear on the edges.
- Consider a Mattress Topper: Add a mattress topper to enhance comfort, provide extra support, and prevent the mattresses from separating.
By following these tips and techniques, you can successfully stack two mattresses without them falling off or separating. Remember to choose the right mattresses, prepare the bed frame, and secure the top mattress with the right support. With a little creativity and planning, you can enjoy a comfortable and restful sleep on your stacked mattresses.

I need help with keeping 2 mattresses together hopefully without buying anything new for them. I was allowed to use rope and want advice on how to keep it from coming undone. I only have 200kr to spend.
Get 2 twin mattresses and use 2 larger fitted sheets to connect them together. When in single use, close fold the mattresses on top of each other. When extended, flop over the top mattress. Does that seem like something that would work for you?
Why would they fall off?
Amazon sells grippy fabric that you put between the box springs and top mattress. Search Amazon for “keep mattress from slipping” (sorry i know you said no spending, but maybe it will give you some ideas)
Why are you stacking two mattresses?
I’ve seen some people use a cargo strap, to go through and hold mattresses together.
Try fitted sheet.
If you think you need additional support, throw in a flat sheet first.
For better hold, you can use those suspender straps from amazon to keep the sheets in place. They attach to the corners of the sheet underneath the mattress to hold the sheets in place.
You could always get some rope and tire the 2 mattresses together, you would have yo cut the fabric of the mattresses and tie the rope around the metal frames inside the mattresses. There is another way but you may feel the rope when you lay on the bed
Mattress encasement- it’s basically a zippered cover for the mattress, you can buy them cheaply online or if you have a good seamstress, it’s just getting a long zipper attached to enough fabric as will fit the mattresses snugly. Two twin mattresses side by side equal a queen for measurement reference.
If you want to stack them, an extra deep fitted sheet could work. You might be better off with wide nylon webbing though. You may be able to get this from a Facebook buy nothing group or even by asking at nearby cargo facilities for some of their broken ratchet straps (you just need the fabric portion) which you can clean and wrap the two stacked mattresses together like ribbon around a gift box.
I’ve used a couple of pieces of shelf liner between them
I have the same bed with the mattresses stacked when the bed is not extended. The mattresses don’t move.
Lay them flat, on top of each other, not sideways, doing so will make them prone to tip, and will be much less comfortable. On a side note, due to their texture, they are probably kind of slippery one to each other. Either find a way to fix them together ( a few thin rope around?) , or chose a sheet or any large piece of fabric not feeling slippery when rubbed against the mattress material, and put it between the two.
