How to Hang Picture Frames and Wall Art on Chalkboard

Chalkboard walls have become a popular design trend in recent years, and for good reason. They add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room, and can be a great way to add some extra storage or display space. But have you ever wondered how to hang picture frames and wall art on a chalkboard wall? It’s easier than you think! In this article, we’ll show you how to do it like a pro.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, make sure you have the following supplies:

  • Chalkboard wall (made of metal, glass, or plastic)
  • Adhesive putty (such as 3M Command Strips or adhesive strips)
  • Picture frame or wall art
  • Level (optional)
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Pencil or marker
  • Erasable marker (for chalkboard-specific hanging)

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Before you start hanging, take a moment to plan your layout. Decide where you want to place each piece of art on the chalkboard. Consider the size of the frame, the shape of the wall, and the overall aesthetic you’re going for. Make a quick sketch or diagram to help you visualize the placement.

Step 2: Clean the Chalkboard

Make sure the chalkboard is clean and free of dust, dirt, or old chalk marks. This will help ensure a smooth, even surface for your adhesive putty to stick to.

Step 3: Mark the Spot

Use a pencil or marker to mark the spot where you want to place each piece of art. If you’re using a chalkboard with a grid pattern, you can use the lines to help you find the center or the corners.

Step 4: Apply Adhesive Putty

Peel the backing off the adhesive putty and press it firmly onto the back of the picture frame or wall art. Make sure it’s centered and even, then smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Step 5: Hang Your Art

Carefully lift the picture frame or wall art and place it onto the marked spot on the chalkboard. Press down gently to ensure it’s secure and level. Use a level if you need to double-check.

Step 6: Adjust and Refine

Take a step back and evaluate your handiwork. Make any necessary adjustments to the frame’s position or the adhesive putty’s placement. You can use an erasable marker to add any extra details, such as a title or quote, directly to the chalkboard.

Tips and Variations

  • Use different shapes and sizes of adhesive putty to create unique, asymmetrical arrangements.
  • Experiment with different hanging styles, such as nested or overlapping frames.
  • Add some whimsy with chalkboard-specific accessories, like comic strips or inspirational quotes.
  • Consider using chalkboard-friendly art pieces, like hand-drawn illustrations or vintage prints.

By following these simple steps, you can create a beautiful and unique display on your chalkboard wall that adds personality and style to any room. Happy decorating!

Just moved into a new apartment that was converted from an old school. They left the chalkboards on all the walls. They are super fun and cool but they cover EVERY single wall. I'm looking for advice on how to hang some picture frames/canvas wall art. I obviously don't want to drill into them, but I have found that the command strips I bought do not stick to the chalkboard at all. Any advice would be wonderful!
