How to Take Your TV Off the Mount: A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you looking to relocate your TV to a different room or wall, or perhaps update to a newer model? Whatever the reason, removing your TV from its mount can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not familiar with the process. In this article, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to safely and successfully take your TV off the mount.
Gather Essential Tools and Materials
Before you start, make sure you have the following tools and materials:
- A screwdriver (preferably a Torx screwdriver, depending on the type of mount)
- A wrench or Allen key (if your mount has a locking mechanism)
- A soft cloth or rag
- A level (optional, but recommended to ensure the TV is properly aligned)
Step 1: Disconnect Power and Cables
Ensure your TV is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet. Also, disconnect any cables connected to the TV, such as HDMI cables, power cords, and satellite or antenna cables.
Step 2: Identify the Mounting Type
Check the type of mount your TV is using. There are two common types: tilt mounts and full-motion mounts. Tilt mounts allow for adjustments in the horizontal plane, while full-motion mounts offer more flexibility, including tilting, swiveling, and rotating.
Step 3: Remove the Mounting Screws
Use your screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the TV to the mount. For tilt mounts, you’ll typically find screws on the back or sides of the TV. For full-motion mounts, you may need to remove screws from both the TV and the mount.
Step 4: Loosen the Mounting Bracket
If your mount has a locking mechanism, use your wrench or Allen key to loosen it. This will allow you to slide the TV out of the mount.
Step 5: Gently Pull the TV Away from the Mount
With the screws removed and the mounting bracket loosened, gently pull the TV away from the mount. Be careful not to apply too much force, as you don’t want to damage the TV or the mount.
Step 6: Realign the TV (Optional)
If you’re moving the TV to a different wall or location, use a level to ensure it’s properly aligned. Make any necessary adjustments to the TV’s position.
Step 7: Reattach the Mounting Bracket (If Necessary)
If you’re reinstalling the TV on the same mount, reattach the mounting bracket and tighten the screws. Make sure everything is secure and level.
Tips and Precautions
- Always turn off your TV and unplug it before attempting to remove it from the mount.
- Use a soft cloth or rag to prevent scratching the TV or mount.
- Be careful not to touch any internal components or cables while removing the TV from the mount.
- If you’re not comfortable with the process or encounter any issues, consider consulting the manufacturer’s instructions or seeking professional assistance.
By following these steps and taking necessary precautions, you should be able to successfully remove your TV from its mount. Remember to be patient and gentle, as you don’t want to damage your TV or mount. Happy TV mounting (and unmounting)!
Do I unlatch the two horizontal bars, take the weight off them and slide them out? Or just unscrew the vertical bits? I don’t think the center square is actually connected directly to the TV but I can’t honestly tell.
I’ve had similar. See where the vertical bar attached to the TV is hooked on the *lower* horizontal bar of the mount? There’s a ‘strap’ around the backside of the lower bar, hinged below the bar and with a Philips screw above the bar. It prevents the bottom of the TV from being tilted out away from the mount.
Remove the screw on both sides, let that strap ‘drop’,
tilt the bottom of the TV out an inch or two away from the lower bar, and the lift the whole TV up off of the upper bar.
Once on the floor you may remove the vertical pieces from the TV if needed.
I have the same mount, they are cool and ultra positionable. u/neanderthalman has your procedure. Remove that one screw, unplug everything then lift off the arm. Vert bars stay with the TV, Horz arms stay with the mount.
