I ground through a new one in a single night. That was enough to convince my doctor that maybe the new medication with a known rare side effect of causing teeth grinding might be a problem.

Botox injections into your masseter muscles could make a huge difference! Many dentists offer it now for exactly this reason, it’s a legit treatment and it could radically improve your quality of life as far as jaw pain and headaches as well as improving your facial aesthetics because chances are your masseters are hugely overgrown and altering your appearance. Since you say this is anxiety related treating your mental health with therapy and medication is obviously also highly recommended but you seem like an excellent candidate for Botox as well.

How’s your stress level? I used to grind my teeth and have terrible tension headaches.
When I removed my primary source of stress I stopped grinding my teeth, stopped getting headaches, and lost 20lbs.

I work in a dentist office. This is normal. Good thing you have a guard or you’d be doing tuis damage to your teeth. Ppl literally crack their teeth. I’ve seen ppl crack thru these within months sometimes. 😬😬

Same. Mine is in FAR worse condition. My dentist told me when I get a new one, he’d like to use my old one to show people how important they are 😂 mine cracked and the grooves in it are so deep, I don’t know how it’s not completely broken yet!

I was a serious teeth grinder as well. The guards did not work for me and in fact, cut my gums up, causing more harm than good. Look into Psysical therapy and relaxing of the jaw muscles. After years of dealing with this, that is what actually made a difference, to the point where now the grinding has stopped. I had the botox injections, they worked for a few weeks both times but the grinding always came back.

You are not alone.
When I put those things in, it’s like a reflex to start biting /clenching. It’s even worse if I’m stoned, depending on the strain. Like I am aware, and do it, despite my best efforts to relax my jaw..

Did you ever get tested for sleep apnea? It is the leading cause of teeth grinding and night guards can obstruct breathing further and make it even worse. You might just need a cpap.

EVERYONE in this thread please look into “TMJ Exercises” for tiring your jaw muscles and an SOVA Max Night Guard (pricey but worth it). Unless you’re a literal dachshund trying to chew threw these, it’ll take months before you consider getting another one just to switch out between cleanings easier.
Get some Efferdent tabs + warm water (everyday after using them) for your mouthguard and brush them with toothpaste every chance you are able to.

Look into magnesium citrate – can help relax the chewing muscles.
If it’s that severe check Botox (can be used to relax the same muscle).

I had super bad teeth grinding to the point of cracking a molar when I was a teen, have gotten it under control with massages to the jaw muscles (they’re mostly in your neck, like connecting down to your collar bone) plus acupuncture.

Hi, years ago I used to have intense grinding of my teeth, to an extent where I would wake up with my jaw locked into position and feeling like my teeth will fall out of its socket for how painful it is. I never went to the doctor, but what I did was massage my jaw muscles all the way up to behind my ears everyday, trying to ease the pressure before I go to sleep, and now I don’t have any problems.

My dentist gave me a different type of guard, it’s basically a big bubble just for my top front 8 teeth. It actually works really well, because any grinding I can achieve now is just my bottom front teeth on the big bubble of acrylic and because my jaw is forced to be more relaxed due to the construction of the guard, my overnight habits have changed and I barely grind my teeth anymore. Nor more headaches or jaw aches.
There’s a Pokémon named Bruxish after this condition, and it has a super strong jaw and sharp teeth that can crush marine Pokémon’s shells. It clenches its jaw to build up psychic power. Not interesting, really, but it made me think of that Pokémon lol

Just a thought, and I by no means think that everyone will be the same, but I used to do this regularly. When my doctor put me on a sleep anxiety medication, I completely stopped clinching and grinding my teeth at night. Maybe a talk to your doctor might help?

I was doing the same thing. You should definitely check out getting some Botox in your masseter muscle. I can’t say enough good things about it. For me it was literally instant relief the moment I got the shot. You can feel your muscles loosen but idk if you clench your teeth all day like I was.

Can confirm about nighttime teeth grinding. Ive ground my teeth since I was a kid, and have gone through a few of the hard plastic guards. My teeth are already pretty worn down due to the years of grinding without a guard. So if you like being able to bite through celery, cilantro, onions slices, bacon, tomatoes slices, or anything that might go onto a sandwich/burger, keep using the bite guards! And soaking them in hydrogen peroxide is one of the best ways to keep them clean!
