It’s been known for 20 years to never buy Civ games anywhere near release, wait for at least 1 usually 2 expansions, plus additional patches

NEVER buy a Civ game for full price. That shit will go on sale within months for an massive amount off.

Didn’t you do any research/ watch reviews/ check out pre-release video’s and gauge the game’s state before spending 70 quid?

I’d say “don’t buy games day 1” is a better way to go. There are full priced games that are worth the price. Like BG3 was a great product right out the gate. KCD 2 just released and is almost universal praised for how complete it is. It’s a matter of perspective but some dev companies deserve a full price purchase.
Edit: I get BG 3 was early access for a while maybe I could have used a better example. But I’m talking full release here Early Access has tons of asterisks attached to it.

It took me about 5 hours to adjust to the new mechanics. I was pretty disappointed with the changes when I started, but after playing it for a while, I actually really enjoy it. The combat system especially is significantly improved.

I don’t really have any issues with the game. It’s different – but I don’t hate it.

in 2016, Civ VI made its appearance. I was already playing Civ V in a frequent fashion.
I was thinking about buying it, but I decided to take my time.
A year later, more or less, there was a special offer, and I took advantage of it.
In the overall, I rarely played Civ VI and I could play and enjoy Civ V these days easily.

Knowing the risks after watching PotatoMcWhiskeys positive and negative reviews I decided to take the plunge, which isn’t like me as I’m usually a patient gamer.
Got a physical copy delivered from wAmazon as it was 10 quid cheaper than steam and came with a pre purchase code!
After a few false starts in learning the new mechanics I’m enjoying it… Mostly.
The UI is shite. Huge popups everywhere, all the menus are just so big and functionality that’s hidden that should be obvious. Looks like it was designed for console users.
CIV is for the long term though and I’m sure it will get updated to buggery over many years like VI was.

I like the new game. It was worth the extra money to play something I enjoy, now. Yeah it’ll go on sale, but I’ll be playing this game for years.

It’s definitely become more of a dance figuring out which AAA games are gonna be worthwhile these days. I’ve never bought a game for $70, but I think I’m about to break that with the new Monster Hunter. BUT, they’ve released two playable demos, communicated their change intentions clearly, and have a history of good games. You really have to take it case by case.

It depends.
I payed full price for BG3 and I’m happy with this.
But I still think the most stupid things – buying a game at the same day when it was released, w/o reading review, waiting for first bug fixes, etc.
I started pirating games to check first 4-6h. I’d all good – buying. If no – sorry, Devs, fuck off.

I will pay $60 for a game if I am excited enough for it, I simply rarely get that excited about games anymore. In a few months, I will be closer to 40 than 30. I have a huge backlog of games. Most of the games that I am interested in that are newish? They end up going on sale 90% of the time before I even find a reason to play them xD

Or maybe get a job. I swear gamers these days just like to bitch and complain about every single thing ever. Gaming is the cheapest hobby by far and the fact games have stayed at similar pricing for 20+ years with discounts on steam for half that is pretty awesome. Also, if people are rushing out to buy new 5000 series cards for $1000-$3000 I would hope they aren’t freaking out about spending $50+ on a game.
In the case of OP you keep saying it’s not worth it but you already played it for 9 hours. What other activities do you get 9 hours of entertainment out of for $70?

With some light modding, you can make Civ 7 into what I think is probably the best and most complete game in the series! It’s easy:
Step 1. Install Civ V + its Gods & Kings and Brave New World expansions (you’ll need these files for step 3)
Step 2. Uninstall Civ 7
Step 3. Play Civ V

IF this is your first Civ game… you could have bought an earlier one for cheaper to test the waters. Turning this into a “bash the expensive price tag” is your fault.
