Here in the UK they aren’t legally allowed to turn off your water if you don’t pay because it’s pretty much a human right.
Sure they can take you to court etc but your water will stay on. How fucked up is America that something as vital as water can be restricted.

I literally just argued with someone over this very thing while discussing poverty. They (solidly middle-class growing up, upper middle-class now) said they knew what it was like to be poor because they couldn’t always get what they wanted growing up.
I said “Amy, have you ever, at any point in your life, had to decide between paying for food for your children or paying to keep your electricity on? Or been in any situation even remotely like that?”
“No, but I can still understa-”
No Amy, you can’t. You’ve never experienced it, you’ve never lived through the struggle that would get you to the point where you are *actually* poor, you’ve never had to deal with the never-ending challenges a poor person has to face just to get to the STARTING LINE that you were at the moment you were born. You don’t know the first thing about feeling emotionally drained, physically tired, stressed and anxious nearly ALL the time, feeling like your whole world could crumble beneath you at any moment, feeling desperate to do better for yourself and your children but hitting walls at every turn. You’ve never been overdrawn on a regular basis, never quite able to catch up because you have to pay overdraft fees and late fees and reinstatement fees. No Amy, you have no idea at all what it’s like to be destitute or on your way to it.
One of the biggest problems in solving poverty is the fact that so many people think they know what it means to be truly poor, and because they made it through whatever lame approximation of poverty they’re imagining they faced, they think everyone else should be able to do it too.

“Dad can we vote for someone who will put our taxes towards helping vulnerable people like this single mom?”
“No, honey Daddy needs a tax cut, after all it’s my money and I worked hard for it”
“But doesn’t a single mom work hard Dad? I heard she has two jobs?”
“Then she’ll be able to pull herself up by her bootstraps honey, wouldn’t want her to become a freeloader by giving her what she needs to survive.”

It doesn’t make me smile anymore. Because people will use examples like this as a defense of the current system that allows it to happen in the first place, ignoring the millions of people who are effected by it, in favor of the few who got lucky and received charity.

Once upon a time someone did this kindness for me. I wasn’t the mom, just a kid living in a shitty situation. That person changed my life in untold ways from that simple act. Her and her mom are my heroes.

If the social safety net were something one would expect from the “richest nation on Earth”, instead of a post-capitalist hellscape, the world would be a better place.

But, at the same time, if less people were worried about ‘the free ride’ of people who genuinely need help then we wouldn’t be having a single mom’s water being shut off.

I hope they also looked in to how that can be stopped in future. I’m not saying I know of anything to guarantee it, only that there are assistance programs that can help a bit. As someone that’s a hermit, do any cities have programs that offer free babysitting to low income (single) mothers? Because if that woman doesn’t have friends or family she can regularly rely on, taking care of the kid is a giant wall against finding a job for anyone that can’t get an actually high paying job. I’ve known a person that stated their baby sitter was making more than they were (this was a Mom with I think 2 kids working at a grocery store, the father working close by at an only slightly higher paying job).
Edit: Okay looks like Head Start (?) might be an option, though it doesn’t look like it’s an option that goes beyond pre-school (is that enough?). Maybe see about approaching one of the more truly community minded churches. Even if the requirement is accepting the faith it would have to be worth it.

I mean I grew up exactly like this, single mom that had me and my brother. Shit isn’t cool that we can live like this in the richest country on earth. I was also confused by kids complaining about their parents paying part of their college or none at all when I got older. I just assumed that once you hit 18 your problems are your own and if you want to go to college its either the military or debt. Parents aren’t a part of that plan.
