My 6 year old daughter knows what that is. She walks around my shop with her favorite one (with the brass extender) telling me how long things are š

When I was growing up. It was a walkie-talkie or a sword. Once a robot. Probably the idea for the robots in Interstellar. Oh and sometimes we would measure stuff with it.

As I remember it was a six foot ruler. Common plumbing measuring device. The ones that I used if you put the edge of the first leg on 23.5 in. then straightened it out (had to move two legs to get to 23.5) the first leg laid out a 45 with the rest of the stick. This was very handy.

My Dad had one. For me it was a sword, a walkie-talkie, a gun, a fishing pole, or just something to annoy my sister by poking her from across the room. Imagination was our favorite toy in the 60s and 70s.

My Dad had several. ( mostly because I broke a lot of them as a kid). Trying to fold/unfold with care was tough as a kid.

I had a smaller version of one of these. I worked for years as an archaeologist and needed to constantly measure stuff out in the field. Standard spring tape measures will get completely messed up if sand gets in them. That was not an issue with the folding rulers.

I was a young kid on a construction site for a private school ( new building ) late 70ās
Old duffer came in with a folding rule and step ladder. He spent the day measuring around this giant 8 sided room and taking notes on paper.
A few weeks later he came back with his installers and proceeded to install custom fit book cases and mouldings .
I still think about that.
Know what it is?! I still have two of them. Lol

You’d be smart to hire a man that arrives to bid a job with one of these in his back pocket although most of their quality have sadly retired.

It’s not that strange, it’s a folding measuring stick.
Or, fuck I’m old!
They still sell these.
Called it a stick rule in the NY/NJ bldg trades
