Title: "Surreal Haze: Capturing the Unseen in Oregon’s Sky"
As I stepped out of my home in Oregon in August 2017, I couldn’t help but be struck by the eerie, orange-hued sky. The once-pristine blue had given way to a thick veil of haze, casting an otherworldly glow over the landscape. I grabbed my camera, eager to capture the unusual atmospheric phenomenon. In this article, I’ll share my journey of capturing the surreal beauty of the forest fire smoke haze that descended upon Oregon that summer.
The Challenge
The haze was the result of a series of forest fires in neighboring states, which had released massive amounts of smoke into the atmosphere. As a photographer, I had to adapt quickly to the changing conditions. The skies, once bright and clear, now hung ominously over the city. I knew I had to work fast to capture the unique beauty of this fleeting moment before it vanished.
The Image
With my camera at the ready, I scoured the city for vantage points that would allow me to capture the haze in all its glory. I eventually found a small park with a clear view of the surrounding landscape. The haze, now a deep orange, seemed to hug the ground, tantalizing me with its ethereal beauty. I adjusted my camera settings to accommodate the low light, and with a deep breath, I clicked the shutter.
The Photography Process
In retrospect, I may have over-processed the image, but I loved the resulting photo so much that I couldn’t resist sharing it with the world. I recall experimenting with various techniques to capture the haze in all its absurdity, from extreme exposure adjustments to high-contrast settings. The end result was a photograph that defied the laws of nature, yet still managed to evoke a sense of wistfulness and longing.
Capturing the Unseen
In processing the image, I wanted to accentuate the surreal quality of the haze. The haze had transformed the world around me, and I wanted the image to do the same for the viewer. By pushing the colors to their limits, I strove to create a visual representation of the hazy, dreamlike atmosphere that seemed to suffocate the city. In the end, I was left with a photograph that was equal parts haunting and mesmerizing.
Lessons Learned
While capturing the fire smoke haze wasn’t without its challenges, I learned a valuable lesson: the importance of adaptability and creativity. The haze, though a nuisance, offered a unique opportunity to reframe the familiar, turning the ordinary into something extraordinary. As a photographer, it’s essential to recognize the hidden beauty in uncertainty and to seize the moment, no matter how fleeting.
The Image Now
Fast forward to today, and the image remains one of my personal favorites. Despite the initial over-processing, it has earned a special place in my portfolio, a constant reminder of the transient nature of life and the importance of capturing the unseen. I’m grateful for that day in August 2017, when the haze descended upon Oregon, and I was able to pause, camera in hand, and reframe the world around me.
