Gold is seen as a hedge against bad times. There are even programs that allow poor women to purchase flakes over time so they will have jewelry to pass onto their daughters. Also while much is held in gold bars most of it is jewelry. A lot isn’t like this it is simple rings and necklaces. But gold is heavy, a few rings and earrings and a few necklaces and it adds up

I use to be an insurance assessor, Indian homes were often preyed upon then burgled because they are known to have large amounts of gold.

Indian here. The reason we have gold is because we in some kind of way think it as both an investment as well as culturally it has high value since in all kind of things like weddings, baby showers or engagement gold is given as gift as well.

Other reason is people here in general like to invest in gold the most so during big festivals like diwali or new year gold is bought as an investment.

And then there is ancestral gold which is basically passed in the family for generations. This is the one which we never sell and is basically passed down by the mother to her daughter in law and so on. I mean even my mother was passed 4 necklaces by my grandmother which was passed to her by her great grandmother.

And even in our household the parents starts saving and investing in gold so that they can gift it to their daughter in law in future when the son marries. Its a tradition which is supposed to be followed so that one reason there

I had a colleague who’s daughter was gifted £100000 worth of gold jewellery on her wedding night. He was expected to gift the same if his son married. But he could have just been BSing me.

I read this as Indian woman, not “women”. I was sitting here reading the comments for way too long fully convinced there was this one multi-billionaire woman Scrooge McDuck-ing her way through an Indian palace.

11% of the world’s reported gold

Indian temples probably have more than that.

Just google “temple made of gold” and you get multiple results all from India.

Yes that is true. Most see Gold as reliable asset class and also as a status symbol. More over interest rates for Loan over Gold is cheap.

No-matter how poor you are, having gold atleast few grams is seen as a basic need.

In my state (Kerala), weddings without atleast 1 KG gold as Gift/ornaments is quite rare

Well Indian women are 9% of all humans, so kind names sense actually.

Indian women are the final boss

Interesting to think about! Indian women really know the value of gold. Definitely a powerful asset to hold onto.

W Indian women

Hopefully one will soon earn the first Olympic gold by an Indian woman.

Well there are also like a billion Indian women so on average it’s probably not that much

Indian women have two traits in common with dragons – they love collecting gold and they breath out fire when angry. 😁

lol they’re ‘physically’ richer than the entire American nation, by far (if you consider that fiat currency has no real value).

Me, not owning a single piece of gold jewellery as a 42 yr old married Indian woman living in India ….now I guess Thats damn interesting 😅

Wtf with the comment section.

India has a population of 1.429 billion. Women make up 48.41% of India. That means there’s about 692 million Indian women. Divided by world population Indian woman make up 8.65% of the worlds population.

Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but if 8.65% of the population holds 11% of something, sure that’s above average but it’s not a crazy amount?

My father’s elder brother always tells me that savings should be invested in four equal ways :

1 Liquid money (for any emergency)
2 Loan to friends and family (on interest)
3 Gold (Jewellery and Coin)
4 Land (Other immovable assets)

When you have a requirement for money, you should use funds from one to four.

I can confirm this

About 1 of every 10 people on earth is an Indian woman.

Indian women never buy western 18 kt.

My ex wife was (is?) Indian. This checks out.

I have more digital gold then physical one. Does that count too?

India makes up approximately 18% of the world population. This isn’t surprising they have that much gold.

what would happen if crypto takes over the place in the rest of the world?

Period, queens

Good for them!

The rest is in Spain, USA, Britain

Indian woman are about 11% of the world.

India represents 17.5% of the World’s population, assuming that about 50% of that are women, 11% is actually below average.

I mean there’s fucking billions of em so it doesn’t surprise me.

I want to marry her!

And 10% is in electronics. The rest of the gold is taken by rappers.

I mean India is 17.78% percent of the world’s population so half would be 8.89% of the world population. 11% of the gold isn’t too far off but still interesting!

So 9% of people own 11% of gold?

So about 10% of the world’s population holds about 10% of the world’s gold? Shook

Terrible post, no source, just fear mongering and/or potential racist propaganda against Indian people.

Edit: Referencing this [chart] (https://www.gold.org/goldhub/data/gold-reserves-by-country?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA1eO7BhATEiwAm0Ee-DTlbu8Afb5LVUdkTs30ZPvF1sYmTGJb5nhJZuxZ1EFnzB05erlZBxoCn7gQAvD_BwE), the private supply of Indian citizens gold would have to be greater than 7279.83 tonnes which is comical.

In other news Indian men bought 11% of the worlds gold

English isn’t my first language.

For a moment I was VERY confused. But it’s women, not woman Ü
