This day out on the water was not supposed to happen. I was on my way to Qaanaaq / Thule and I didn’t realize that the reputation of it being difficult to get to was real. I had no issues booking it for the same day all the way from Copenhagen to SFJ to JAV to Upernavik and then Qaanaaq. Why wouldn’t the stars align?
Long story short, I had been delayed for seven days because my plane was overweight and I got denied boarding. As a consolation prize, Air Greenland put me up in the hotel, gave me meal vouchers and some pocket change. I used that for a local boat to take me out. I was floored by how much beautiful light I saw.
What started out as a terrible day ended up being the best of my life. We got the best combination of light I have ever seen and that night we got northern lights that were spectacular.
When I eventually got to my destination, it was a trip that altered the course of my life because now my work is mostly centered around remote Greenland.
