They were almost universally nisei (2nd-generation Japanese-Americans holding American citizenship), not immigrants. And given what they went through to prove their loyalty, they would probably be upset about the mischaracterization.
Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii won the Medal of Honor with the 442.
When I was in college a while back, my best friend’s father fought in the 442nd.
Edit: I just looked him up. He received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star and was a POW captured by the Germans.

Being from Hawai’i, the 442 is very well recognized and celebrated here. If you have the time, look up Sen Daniel Inouye. He definitely lived to serve the people.
Look it up, these Guyโs were probably the ballsiest conventional unit in the entire US military.

i visited dachau on a high school trip and didn’t learn until later that my dad’s uncles had been part of the 442nd troop that liberated that camp. highly recommend folks check out the broadway play “allegiance” for a really moving retelling of the nikkei incarceration and service in the 442nd. just to let people know, the 4000 purple hearts earned by this unit is because there was a 302% casualty rate. yes, these were brave men but also they were being used as cannon fodder and, essentially, the US’s own kamikaze unit. they fought for what they believed was right even when they knew it might not benefit them.
George Takei has a book on this. They are often nisei, second gen Americans, put through the grinder to ‘prove their loyalty.’ You will not find a more loyal soldier than them. Fucking Heroes, all of them.

My father was in Italy during WW2. He talked about how frightened the Germans were of the Japanese American troops. The American military broadcast that the Japanese had over run Asia and were now invading Italy. These men had a well deserved reputation for remarkable courage under fire.
Yup, Grandpa was in the 100thโฆ. Joined up when our family got an all paid expense trip to the Salt Lake desert camp courtesy of US government.

I would love to hear/read more about their experiences in the war and their perspective on the Axis nations they were fighting. Anyone know any good sources for firsthand accounts or memories from units like these?
