Wow this movie is brutal for something made in the 40s. Amazing what they could portray with no violence or gore.
One of the few, pre-21st century movies about a female serial killer. By 1945, its director, John M. Stahl had proven himself to be one of Hollywood’s masters of conventional melodramas. What he delivers here, however, is an early film-noir dressed up in vibrant technicolor with all the other trappings of more ordinary entertainments. The results are incredibly compelling and the movie turned out to be a box-office success.
