When I got my last dog from a local shelter, I purposely asked to see the oldest dog there. He was a 10 yr old white lab named Miles. He was so incredibly sweet, loved my daughter, and needed no training at all. He was such a great dog, I couldnโt fathom why anyone wouldnโt want him.
Unfortunately he had 2 fatty tumors, one on his side and one on his chest. After both of them got pretty massive, I went to have them removed. They told us that the one on his chest was pushing his trachea, choking him. The one on his side was pushing his heart. Even if they removed them, he had maybe 3 months of agonizing pain left. I had to make the horrible decision to put him down that day, 1 month before we moved. I have his ashes in my living room, and my daughter sometimes talks to him. We miss that old pup so much

Maybe Iโm too high, but I think itโs really great that old dogs or older animals in general are given a second chance, that I get tears in my eyes here ๐
Our big ol’ sweet foster boy Ralph. We don’t know how old he is, but he’s got plenty of life left in him & all he wants is to love & be loved…& Eat, eat, eat, sleep & fart (loudly). It’s a shame no one wants older dogs. Best of boys 11/10!

I went to the pound looking to adopt a puppy and ended up adopting a twelve year old boxer named Tigger. His kidneys were failing and they gave him months to live.
Took him to at least let him die with some dignity.
On a whim I bought DinoVite and started him on it. Never used it before and can’t say it saved him. He lived for two years after that and I think he would have went longer.
What killed him was a rabies vaccination booster he needed in order to put him in a kennel for a couple of days as I had to take a business trip. I woke up late that night to him convulsing on the floor. My heart hurts to this day thinking of it.
But Tigger the boxer was saved from a Kansas pound and died in the beautiful mountains of Northern California. RIP Tigger. Love you you stinky old boy. Glad we got to spend some time together.

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary in Mt.Juliet, TN, USA does a similar thing of taking senior dogs in from other shelters. They pay for all vet and grooming services even if you foster the dog at home. If a dog isn’t fostered, they live a happy life at Old Friends until they pass. I got my sweet 10yr old lady from there and she’s been my best friend for 2 years. https://ofsds.org/

my goal if i ever buy a house ๐ซถ my very first dog was adopted and older i loved having her. it felt good just to let her lie around and feed her good and take her for little walks and just overall make her comfortable and happy and stress free. i had her for 8 years and she passed away at 15 in my car on the way to the vet to be put to sleep. i miss her so much but i would take a senior dog all over again and again. my other dog is a rottie he is going to be 5 and i really look forward to making him comfortable and care for him in his older years as well.

I adopted a very old lady from the streets this year, she just survived only 2 months with me (the vet warned me that could happen because she was indeed too old), but damm since the first day I took her she never stopped purred until her last breath.
I cry everytime I remember how much love this little one still had in her bones. Sleep well Galeguinha, thanks for everything. ๐ค ?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2048d36519defe93ac521a676c2818e537a759c5

This makes me so happy. Older and sick doggos deserve all of the love and chances. I found the goofiest-looking photo of a โpurebred huskyโ (100% a Malamute mix) Iโd ever seen on a local shelter site, and learned he was 7+ years old, 130+ pounds, significant arthritis, and had a reoccurring soft sarcoma in his leg and shoulder. The shelter described him as a โgrumpy old manโ and were visibly scared of him, so people just kept passing him over. Said fuck it, met him alone, and he went belly-up for pets in a whopping 3 minutes becauseโฆ He was still just a puppy and a lapdog at heart. He just needed a chance. Knew he was my dog, and we shared several amazing years together. The cancer did reoccur, but we managed carefully, and he had a happy doggy life complete with frankly brilliant shenanigans. 0 regrets.

I do the same. I have a 13yo that I adopted when she was 10. I also foster senior dogs and hospice. Everyone always wants the young dogs and puppies. The old ones need love too. In my experience, senior dogs are way easier to adopt and foster. They are usually already trained and chill as fuck.

My wife and I just started doing this. It’s been a dream of ours for a while as we are not having kids but we always thought we would need to wait as we figured it would be expensive. And while it has been, we work with a local dog rescue non profit and they actually pay for surgeries, diet specific food, and will even come to our home to take care of our dogs when we are away. Made it much more simple and less expensive than we thought and so worth it. It’s a community funded effort and been a lot of fun bring apart of.
Our little elderly dogs are bonded and were found abandoned in a trailer eating trash. This first time we gave them a blanket, they cried, and slept for hours. Sweetest things to ever happen to us, despite some of the minor problems they came with.

I have so much respect for people who adopt older pets! Personally I’m not strong enough to do it–13 years doesn’t feel anywhere long enough when you adopt a young dog, I couldn’t imagine the heartbreak of knowing you’d likely only have 1-2 years and then doing it over and over and over again. It’s one reason I’m not sure I’ll ever get pet rats either, despite loving them a lot. It’s so hard. ๐
