If I replace each pixel over time, will it still be the same meme?

People say it’s a funny and clever joke but are too afraid to explain what they think it means because they are afraid they would give different answers and would look silly

Do I need to ask Peter?

Someone please explain the joke to me

We’ve done it.
We’ve found the only funny meme in this format.

We’re done now.

That’s pretty clever. Kudos to you OP

That’s… actually funny.

*slow clap*

Those are vastly different answers…. Or are they?

*Vsauce appears out of nowhere*

Is it the same ship?

This is the first good meme I’ve seen in this subreddit

Normally I hate this format but this is exquisite

Nice one

Those are 2 different ships!

Are the liking the same ship or not?

Meanwhile me over here the ship of Theseus is what ever ship Theseus is on

This will be on explain the joke in a few hours mark my words

Shouldn’t the pictures be different…?

Good one 😂

m-me too thanks

Why did I assume shipping theseus with the bull of minos

Not related to this meme, but this reminded me of an Indian movie named “Ship of Theseus” by Anand Gandhi. Must watch if you are into philosophy.

What movie is this from?

Which one?

Can’t wait to see this on one of those explain the meme cause I don’t have 2 braincells to rub together sub reddits.

At what point does it become a replica?

I always feel this way when someone buys a completely broken down car from a century ago and uses just the frame to rebuild it with modern parts.

They both are talking about ship of theseus only, so what then ?

I know about the ship of theseus

Actually a good one, wow, did not think this template could be funny, well done.

I’m looking forward to this being on r/peterexplainsthejoke tomorrow.

A bit strange it has the modern Greek flag on

Alright this one got a chuckle

I think the answer is this (not to the meme)

Shops are made out of materials. If you replace all the materials of a ship and use the old materials to make a ship you have two ships.

THE ship of Theseus is the original, the one being actively used and continuing to be called the ship of Theseus regardless of how many of the materials have been replaced.

The new ship using the old materials, is simply a new ship that happens to be an exact replica of the first ship, using its old materials.

Can someone make the ship of the left turned around so it looks like it is outgoing? That would make this meme perfect.

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry is an excellent band.

I used to ship these two but honestly theyve both changed so much i wonder….

This is so fucking good

Plutarch actually looks like someone that would come up with this thought experiment stoned out of his mind. “If you replace every part of a ship, is it still the same ship?” “Wooah dude, you should put that in your scroll”

This is so god damn stupid, I love it

Okay since apparently no one here knows what a Ship of Theseus is, let me explain it to you fucking monkeys.

The resulting ship does not have to be identical to the original ship.

The paradox is that if you replaced all the parts of a ship over time, at what point is it a different boat? Is it ever a different boat?

It’s easier to think about if you use an axe instead of a ship. You replace the handle of an axe, is it still the same axe? What about when you then replace the head? Is it the same axe then?

That’s the paradox. It’s not really a *paradox* insofar as it is a metaphor to explore deeper questions about Athenian identity and political continuity. The real ship of Theseus was a sacred vessel preserved by the Athenians for centuries in honor of their legendary hero Theseus. As parts of the ship decayed, they were replaced with new materials.

HERES WHAT ITS NOT:

* THE ORIGINAL SHIP AND THE RESULTING SHIP DO NOT HAVE TO BE IDENTICAL

* YOU DO NOT HAVE TO MAKE A SHIP OUT OF THE PARTS REPLACED

Go read a fucking book people.
