I never understood why an app like a calculator needs my location? Bitch you do math you don’t need to know where I live.
Its because you are the product. They take your information and they sell it.
That’s what I noticed with my new phone.
Want maps, well unless you give these 3 permissions, and full not only when the app is open, they won’t work right.
Trying to send a text quickly for the first time, 5 Pop ups from different apps wanting to be default, or permissions or weird settings they want me to change.
There should be a simple app maker who is just that, simple. Id rather pay a dollar for an app then free ones who steal my info
I get the appeal for smart homes and interconnected systems but I never want it even if I can afford it. I’d want a physical key to my house, a thermostat I can control with buttons… and this is coming from an AI engineer.

This was me shopping for a garage door opener. Fuck, why does it need a camera?? Why does it need to connect to WiFi??
Its not about smart or dumb tech its about money…. companies receive money in exchange for your data… hence why even supermarkets are raising the prices 20% and then offering a 15% discount if you use their card so they can log all your purchase habits and sell that info to any other marketing companies that buy it.
I don’t think people want “dumb tech” back, what they want is just to use their apps and devices without a constant eye monitoring everything you do just to sell you more cheap shit from China in an attempt to make the western world billionaires even more money.
I needed to buy replacement cartridges nr 21 for my 2003 hp printer and the shop guy looked at me like I was retarded „sorry we don’t sell that it‘s too old, please buy a newer model.“ then I found them online as third party make.

Problem is kapitalism and not technology
All of these apps and internet connected devices dont give a shit about you, they are simply harvesting data about you to sell. Yes, your internet connected toaster is collecting data about you.

What annoys me the most is when you have an app for a company, you are now never allowed to go to their website on your phone.
My Chase app was acting up the other day and wouldn’t let me open a trip I got with points. So I was trying to look it up on their website.
Every time I went to chase.com, it would just open the app. I ended up having to wait til I got home and go on my desktop. Would love to find a way to stop that from happening.
I need to buy a new clothes washer and I’m afraid to start looking. Everything suffers from featuritis.
I want a washing machine that just washes clothes. Give me a way to set how long to wash the clothes and how hot to make the water. And Start, Stop, Pause. That’s it. No other variables. It shouldn’t even need a circuit board. With home maintenance, something that simple should last about a hundred years.

I lost it when I went to Home Depot for curbside pickup and you cannot do curbside pickup unless you have their app. But downloading the app is super hard because it’s hard to get connected to any networks from their parking lot. Took me 20 minutes. Then someone came to my car and apologized for taking so long. Took another 20 minutes, then they told me to drive to another pickup area that’s meant for contractors. 45 minutes for curbside. You used to be able to just text or call a number and give them your order number. It would take 5 minutes.
I went to recycle some bottles and get my bottle deposit back to find out instead of putting the bottles in a machine and getting my money as soon as I’m done.
Now I have to download an app, give them all my info including my banking info and then bag the bottles up and put a label on them and leave them somewhere to be picked up and the money to go into my bank account.
Into the garbage can they go.
There is no such thing as a free app anymore. If it doesn’t have ads in it then you are paying by providing data back to the developers. That’s why they always want location data and to track you online across accounts. They want you to set up an account for every app because unless you use a separate email for every account they can search records for your email address and compare it to other online transactions.
