Back then you’d have had a village dance, I think. Wine, beer, or ale depending on the region of europe, a few instruments and a place to dance, plus a few tables with meat and bread/pasta. Some liquor if you were close to a monastery or a regionally famous site (whiskey, anisette, gin, vodka etc)
Not as fancy as this, unless you were urban upper middle class, but still pretty fun I’m sure.
This painting is, specifically, from “La belle epoque” so those guys are not royalty/noblemen, they are engineers, architects and bankers, in a big european city. You could have been invited if you were a rising star at the office, or the first kid in your family to finish some tertiary education. Maybe a marriage suitor trying to meet your boss’s daughter under his watchful eye.
This small room is clearly not the richest place, but there’s money here. It’s like going to a museum opening night for the new season, I guess. If you owned a suit and had oiled up hair, they would have let you in.

Every party has a pooper, so if they *still* didn’t invite *you* , sir…
Then you just suck.
Worse than a party pooper who still gets invited.
Yeah.
That bad.

Oof, the level of historical shade in that response is unmatched. “You wouldnโt have been invited back then either” is the ultimate reality check.

I think Vienna is still holding these once a year. Where I am, also, one dedicated individual does a Slow Dance evening several times a year. Not the same scale, but is very nice in its own way.

Yeah, they call it “prom” in America and crazy people try to tell you it’s “one of the most important times of your life.”

Bringing back galas would be fun, but imagine having to wait for a handwritten RSVP to find out if your crush is attending

I have to attend like 3-5 galas a year. None of them are fun.

Yep, these still exist, even not for royal class. Historical dances are widely popular in narrow circles

I’ve always thought it would be AMAZING to be at an Austrian ball with either of the Johann Strauss orchestras.
I’m tearing up just thinking about it right now.

I mean. The premise is already wrong.
Thereโs lots of balls for people to go to and dance – at least where I am living.
Itโs super fun, too!
No one took anything away from anyone.

Everyone thinks they’d be one of the rich ones when it’s very improbable.
A lot of people still attended faires and dances. They were just the ones set aside for the poors.
well, if we set our minds to it we can make our own gala and invite our own people to it! Take a year and while the planners and doers are making the gala the rest of us can be learning the lore, the style and the etiquette and rules of decorum and the dances oh yes the dances and the music ohh yes the music. ๐ And as usual the things we create as a people are always *The Best Ever*!
yeah we need the gala again only brought up to date.

Balls are still incredibly common in Austria and the rest of Central Europe, they aren’t Upper Class events either. Tickets are usually in affordable price ranges and you just need something appropriate to wear for the dress code of the event.

A lot of the weddings I’ve been to look like this, except for more modern dress obviously. The venues are in this same [fancy Renaissance ](https://i0.wp.com/www.robertscateringservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/biltmore-hotel-wedding-venue.webp?fit=1080%2C886&ssl=1) style as well, there’s a lot of them around here.
Who is “they”???
