Singing to myself in the car is one of my favorite things to do.
Counterpoint: people sing poorly to themselves all the time, and attempting to master a baseline ability you have as a skill is, perhaps more than anything else, *the* human behavior. Do you think the artists of ancient cave paintings were creating without intent or pride?
Doing it well is seen as a skill. Just doing it is not. Most of us sing and dance; we sound and look like wounded animals. Those who do not appear injured have skills. Some people like making art, and some do not. If it is good art, we call it skill. If it is bad art, we call it a hobby.
Some people should stop trying to sound deep.

We’re not forbidding you from singing badly, we’re just asking you to not sing badly in public.
Well, you are ALLOWED to do those things badly. Just don’t be offended when no one cares about what you’re doing. If you want to dance, or sing, or paint, or whatever else; you do you.
What’re you taking about?
Everyone does these things.
People who excel at them can make a living doing so.
No one is stopping you from doing any of those things without being good at it though? Just don’t expect other people to join in and understand time and place.
Birds sing for a specific reason though. Just like bees make hives.
Dancing and singing for entertainment is entirely a human feature, at least to my knowlege. Also I think being competent at a task is a source of joy in and if itself. Few things get your confidence up like being good at something and showing it.

When I go to karaoke I go to have fun. It’s not my fault I sound like someone banging a bag of cats on a wall. It’s not a contest, it’s karaoke.

Couldn’t agree more. As a primary (elementary) school teacher, it saddened me so much to have 10- 12 year old children tell me they “can’t sing, can’t dance, can’t do art “. I made sure they did and loved doing all three.
They wanted to, as well. They *loved* it when I gave them permission and actively encouraged them to go all out. With art, I taught them to *look*, to draw what they saw. Their art and their confidence improved immensely.
Human beings have always danced, sung, made music, and made art. We’re doing something terribly wrong in our culture when so many of our children resist doing any of these because they’re not of professional standard. It’s a real shame

That’s why I categorically dismiss any religion or philosophy that denies singing or dancing or art. These are our baseline behaviors, not some nefarious evil.

This sounds like the sort of thing someone says to comfort themselves for being bad at singing, dancing, and/or art.
It’s okay, you don’t have to be good at these things to enjoy doing them. You don’t have to “get good” at any arbitrary rate. If you find enjoyment doing one or more of these things do it, enjoy yourself.

That’s a pretty annoying statement. If you like singing: sing. If you are good at it: make money with it. What’s the problem?
I sing and dance all the time, I’d go crazy if I didn’t. And I’m definitely not a good dancer.

I agree with, like, the general sentiment, but birds primarily sing to attract mates and therefore try to be good at it, or in more objective terms try to do it in a way that elicits a positive reaction from other birds, and bees’ survival is dependent on their ability to built hives proficiently and quickly

At least in humans, everyone has some creativity to express.

I am always kind of irritated when I doodle or sing or play an instrument or videogames or read a book and people are like “omg you are so gifted” and I am like “dude just practice half a day and you reach my level”. It feels like people are encouraged to NOT try to have hobbies and interests, so many people are bland and boring and got ZERO INTERESTS in their life. Some even mock others for having hobbies like wtf? How jealous could you be of something so natural and normal as human curiosity that you try to badmouth someone for having a hobby? like wtf? I cant even imagine the sad lifes of these people

I’m 64 and cant stand dancing if anyone can see me, I feel so awkward and self conscious.
What is this trying to say?
I’ve been playing drums since I was 6, piano since 7, guitar/bass since 8, and various other instruments at later points. I’m good at it because I enjoy doing it, so I kept doing it.
That’s just how practice/training works. You get better if you keep doing it.
Go to a wedding or a club and watch hundreds of people drunkenly dance together.
Or listen to people loudly sing along at concerts and festivals, or join in chants at sports matches.
Then try telling me we’ve turned it into a skill.
you can sing poorly in the confines of your own space. difference between us and birds is that we should have the shame to not sing poorly in public unless it’s karaoke.

Birds are savage. Most of bird-singing is either mating or them shouting “you fucking infidel” at each other. They’re very deliberate, very competitive.
It’s ok we still sing and dance at home with my 4yo and it’s really cool to do it… like a psycho hygiene haha
