You can use the word dog? For us it’s like “have you escorted the four-legged being around the premises?” and then he picks it up from the tone.

Lol. The problem we have is that in addition to understanding English our dogs are also clairvoyant. As an example, one of them seems to know hours in advance that we are going to do a nail trimming and then disappears under the bed to that perfect defensive point in the center where no one can reach her.

I whatsapped my son the other day asking if we could get a walk in when he came home. One of my dogs either read my mind or can determine what I am typing because she absolutely knew what was going on

That won’t help. The dog will learn new phrases soon.
In my family we switched from 3 different languages (German – English- Polish) to made up fantasy words. Upon switching we had only one peaceful week then the dog understood what we were talking about.

IIRC dogs can recognize/understand only a couple hundred of words. I would love to know which words so I can stop spelling them instead. It seems, at 4+ years old, he would’ve learned all he was going to learn. But here I am spelling waffles just in case.

If I ever train a dog again I’m planning to teach them and discuss their activities using a foreign language. Hoping that degree of obfuscation plus a little added care makes it possible to keep from having to do this.

we had to stop using english words, so we resorted to chinese, but then they picked up on that so we go with vietnamese at this point. they’re too smart when they wanna be. then act dumb when they wanna be like “bath time” and all of a sudden they don’t get it

My dog learned random phrases I use too much like “excuse me” and she’ll get up, “I’ll be right back” or “I’ll be back in a minute” and she’ll stay there, “uh uh” for no, “I’m so sorry” after accidentally/nearly stepping on a paw and she’ll beg to be picked up while I continue to pet/apologize to her

That’s gold! We can no longer say “her” or “she”, and even “he” gets too much attention, so we now identify our dog as “they / them” and that has bought us some time. Inevitably, she will figure that out too, so our next strategy is to switch to Spanish…. Then French, then we considered Portuguese and Italian, but we fear that our time will be up in the Romance languages department. German or Japanese is probably in line in our not so distant future. Gotta love our stealthy little listeners! 🥷🐕

When the dogs learned the word “walk” we would start spelling it out “are you going on a w-a-l-k?” But eventually they learn “doubleyouayelkay” is another way to say “walk”. We are currently on “recreational excursion”. I hear dogs have a vocabulary cap, I wonder how many of their words are synonyms for walk? lol
Maybe I will say “walk” today and confuse them.

We do the same thing!
“Do you want to walk the dogs?” turned into “Any interest in ambulating the canines?”
“We need to potty the dogs” turned into “The hounds need to defecate.”
I can barely ask “do you wanna…” to anyone about anything because as soon as my dogs hear those three words, they’re excited.
