Mt Aspiring (3033m) is the only 3000m+ peak outside of Mount Cook NP in New Zealand. I took this photo while we were climbing up to another mountain, captured in the early morning hours.

The classic route to climb this mountain cannot be seen in the picture (it’s behind), but the more technical ‘South West Ridge’, is the left ridge you can see (the one covered in the shadow).

Title: The Majestic Mt Aspiring South/East Face: New Zealand’s Hardest Climbing Route

Mt Aspring, located on the South Island of New Zealand, is regarded as one of the most intimidating and awe-inspiring mountains on the planet. Its south face, in particular, is a realm of unfiltered adventure, touted as one of the most severe and challenging ascent routes in New Zealand. Join us as we delve into the majesty and mystique surrounding the Mt Aspiring South East Face.

First Ascent in 1989

The renowned mountaineering duo, Alex MacIntyre and Chris Lewis, made history in 1989 by leading the first-ascent party of the Mt Aspiring South face. Their five-day expedition faced numerous obstacles and setbacks, proving the daunting trek to be among the most daring feats in global mountaineering. Since that groundbreaking achievement, the route’s reputation has intensified, attracting serious climbers from far and wide eager to conquer one of the earth’s most brutal climbing challenges.

Geological Rationale

Measuring 1240 meters long and with no less than twelve pitches, Mt Aspiring’s South face tapers to breathtakingly thin corners, presenting angles of up 90 degrees before culminating with a gruelling traverse finale. The entire route is dominated by sheer bedrock, as if sculptured by the universe itself, culminating in precarious ridges held together by countless cracks and delicate ledges of quartz and white quartzite granite.

Charming Landscaping

While some may find aspects of the rock formation dismall, others spot a hidden radiance. Witness the majestic presence of the Matterhorn-like north peak, piercing the sky within the realm below. In certain lighting conditions (during dawn as well as setting sun), those who have battled the South / East face marvel at the eerie glow emanated by the light, casting enigmatic shadows down the towering flanks of The Aspiring Alps.

In Memoriam

Risks abound atop Mt Aspring, with unyielding precipitation, ice glaciers, and numerous rock formations testing the resolve – as well physical and mental condition – of daredevil climbers to push the peaks of this most remote, towering range. At the very front of this grim landscape, rest the spirits: of the legendary climbers, with Alex Mac and Chris Lewis sharing the limousine ride amongst those who bravely attempted feats in this desolate terrain alongside their peers while paying tribute both to the courage and to such tragic events for those who sadly perished with the attempt upon the Aspring.

The Most Difficult Treks

Within the world history of mount climbing, Mt. Aspiring North face and / East face climbing routes have won a special esteem for their fearsome difficulty & unyieldable beauty. We will now learn more about mountaineering that is more so in this grandiose country of New Zealand.
