But for real. I know so many adults that don’t read at all for pleasure. Or at all really.
The first thing literature classes teach before anything on the syllabus, is to hate reading.
Edit: I’m just lucky I got into goosebumps before before schooling transitioned from “English” classes to literature. Taught me that reading could actually be fun. And no amount of Dickens could make me forget it.
Mfs rejected the horus heresy as a valid book but I did convince one guy to start reading it (he’s never gonna financially recover from this)
Reading is reading. Back then, teachers needed to know the books students read so they can properly grade them.

When you find out how many things a school has to do to get a book on the list. You will completely understand why they are still doing Ethan Frome and The Great Gatsby
“Good” is subjective. So while you think it’s good, that doesn’t mean it’s good to everyone or that it’s good for a classroom setting.
