Exploring the Ancient Trails of Cumbe Mayo: A Journey to the Heart of Peru

Perched atop a mountainous terrain, the Cumbe Mayo archeological site lies hidden from the world, waiting to be discovered by adventurous souls. Located just west of Cajamarca, Peru, this ancient site is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the people who once called this region home. Our journey began at an elevation of 12,000 feet above sea level, with the goal of walking a section of the trail that winds its way down to the lower elevations, standing at around 11,000 feet above sea level.

As we set out from the top, the crisp Andean air invigorated us, and the stunning views of the surrounding landscape took our breath away. The trail, worn smooth by centuries of use, was narrow and steep, with loose rock and scrubby vegetation threatening to trip us up at every turn. But we pressed on, driven by curiosity and a desire to uncover the secrets of this long-abandoned settlement.

The trail began to descend, winding its way down the mountain face in a series of switchbacks. The air grew warmer, and the scent of blooming flowers and grasses filled our lungs. As we walked, the silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the occasional chirp of a bird. It was as if we had stumbled into a time warp, leaving the hustle and bustle of modern life behind.

As we rounded a bend in the trail, the ruins of Cumbe Mayo came into view. The ancient structures, overgrown with vines and creepers, stood like sentinels, guarding the secrets of the past. We walked among the ruins, taking care to avoid the crumbling stones and overgrown vegetation. The air was thick with history, and we could almost hear the whispers of the people who once called this place home.

The trail continued to wind its way down the mountain, passing through a series of small villages and farmland. The locals, going about their daily routines, greeted us with warm smiles and curious glances. We exchanged a few words, trying to communicate our admiration for the ancient culture that once thrived here.

As we made our way back up to the higher elevations, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The trail, once a challenge, now seemed a breeze, and we walked in comfortable silence, taking in the breathtaking views.

Our journey through the Cumbe Mayo archeological site was a reminder of the power of human ingenuity and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. As we stood at the top, looking out over the breathtaking landscape, we felt grateful for the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the people who once called this place home.
