On April 1st, 1974, a man hauled 70 tires up to the mouth of a dormant volcanoe in Alaska and set them alight. Seeing the smoke, the residents were afraid that the volcano was about to erupt and called the police. When they investigated, “APRIL FOOL” was spray-painted next to the tires.

Why would police go to the top of a seemingly erupting volcano?

Thatโ€™s a next level prank. Gotta respect it.

Hauling 70 tires up a volcano is no small feat.

โ€œItโ€™s just a prank, broโ€

The prank:

That’s my hometown.

Porky Bickar was the local business owner that did it.

My father, and I drove a broken down dump truck of his to a logging camp one year, and it stalled going up a hill. It rolled off the road into a stand of alder trees, which kept us from falling into the river and potentially dying in the Alaskan wilderness.

I got to ride with a skid steer operator that only had two fingers because he used to be a choker setter, and apparently he wasn’t very good at it. He just happened by and found us off the road.

That’s my story about Porky Bickar, and his shitty dump truck.

Imagine calling the police on a volcano.

Bro was dedicated.

Iโ€™m at bring fake rubber snake to campfire level.

70 tires? Was he not tired?

I remember reading about this! The guyโ€™s kid [wrote a song about it](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?si=2IW24tEUzyeEnneF)

This is the kind of prank that couldโ€™ve gone horribly wrong. But props for the commitment! Thatโ€™s some next-level trolling. Alaska residents probably needed a nap after that one

r/madlads is calling you. Pick up.

A “volcanoe”?

This man must have had something on some powerful people or had really powerful friends. This is the only way I can think of for him to get away with being charged at the federal level since with this the Coast Guard got involved – the local government my find it amusing but the federal government in the 70โ€™s has no sense of humor and Alaska being a potential invasion point for the USSR during the Cold War and this guy doing this โ€œPrankโ€ that got federal resources involved. The artical shouldnโ€™t be on what he did, but how he managed to avoid the federal government from going after him.

Did the guy get arrested?

Good ol’ pre-internet trolling

How he got 70 tires at the top of a volcano?!

Mad lad.

That’s a legendary move

Gotta admire the commitment

Did he get arrested for that

Environmental terrorism

70 tires that high up is crazy

โ€œItโ€™s just a prankโ€

I thought that, in addition to the tires, he set off some dynamite sticks in order to definitively get the townโ€™s attention.

S tier prank

Boomer humor

Sweet prank, thanks for the climate change

In my teens or twenties I would have delighted at putting a prank like this together. Anytime after if I had been taken in by it I would have been furiousย

Uk police have got it right. It would quickly be rejected as “Not a police matter”

Live in Alaska (back then, too), that happened on Mount Edgecumbe. Here’s an article ’bout it: [https://www.sitka.com/porky/porky.htm](https://www.sitka.com/porky/porky.htm)
