Japan is one of the most xenophobic countries on earth. And it’s not like they don’t *need* skilled immigrant labor, they simply *don’t want* skilled immigrant labor.
All eastern Asian countries are grappling with low birth rates and either barely meeting the replacement rate or falling below it. Their populations are getting older, which requires more workers for their care and less for other industries. So Japan should be reaching out across the world to support their labor force but are unlikely to do so until the shit hits the fan.
Given Japan is struggling mightily wrt an aging demographic, the original premise is flawed, no need for a comeback.

We loved Ron DeSantis standing on the debate stage, a double graduate of Ivy League schools, yammering on abt “the elites are terrible” “you don’t need higher education! It’s garbage!” And they eat it up.

Education is a state/local issue.
If the argument is that education has gotten worse since the Department of Education’s existence, then they are doing a poor job and something needs overhauled.
Maybe the US has a contract with the States, ensuring the States retains rights and privileges not given to the Federal Government under the 10A.
And that when you are $36T in debt, you should do away with redundant agencies costing billions a year?
What State does not already have a Department of Education to the extent we need another layer?

Japan, aside from its demographic calamity that is ongoing, has been in economic stagnation for over 30 years with no real recovery in sight. They also have very low wages and horrible work life balance.
Yes, it has great infrastructure, transit, and their cities are very gleaming but under the hood they’re not doing so well.
